A Muslim woman wearing a full-body veil in the world-renowned Paris Opera was told to remove it — and when she refused was kicked out after cast members refused to perform with her covered.
Cast members performing Verdi’s La Traviata “objected strongly” to the presence of a woman in the audience wearing a niqab-type veil, who was seated in the front row.
There has been a ban on Muslims covering their face in public in France since the introduction of a law in 2011.
A singer didn’t spot the woman until the second act of the show, which was when several performers refused to sing until she either took off the veil or was removed from the Bastille Opera house, according to the Daily Mail.
‘A singer spotted her in the front row during the second act,’ said Jean-Philippe Thiellay, director of the Bastille Opera, which was opened by president Francois Mitterand in 1989.
‘Some performers said they didn’t want to sing,’ said Mr Thiellay, who confirmed that she was kicked out.
There has been a ban on Muslims covering their face in public in France since the introduction of a law in 2011.
Muslim women who live in “immigrant” enclaves around Paris found in violation of the law are often given a fine; but this is the first known incident of someone being removed from an performance venue.
The woman — reportedly from a “Persian Gulf state”, and an unidentified man, refused to remove her niqab, and the man engaged in a brief but heated argument with security, before leaving with the woman — who remained completely silent — in a huff.
The niqab is not required under Islam, and is considered by many in the West to be an instrument of misogyny under an Islamic system that treats them as second-class citizens, with rights subordinate to men. In gulf states like Saudi Arabia, woman cannot drive, and in order for a man to be convicted of rape, the woman’s testimony means nothing, and she must instead obtain the tesitmony of five men to convict. Even then sometimes woman will be punished for “adultery” for being raped.
It was in reaction to this misogyny that France, and then Belgium, banned the burka in 2011.
Women living on housing estates on the outskirts of major cities like Paris are regularly criminalized with a fine, but this is the first incident of someone being ejected from an artistic venue.
The Opera incident is bringing about a toughening of the “burka ban.” A spokesman for France’s Ministry of Culture today said it was ‘producing a new set of rules’ to make sure the so-called ‘burka ban’ was better enforced in theatres, museums and other public institutions.
Meanwhile in the United States, the Obama Administration’s Justice Department has sued businesses for restricting women wearing burqas or niqabs, and supported a case against the state of Florida for not allowing burqas to be worn in driver’s license photos.
