Bad News for Hartz = Good News for PetsMore bad press for the companies peddling pet poison! Over the years, ConsumerAffairs.com, which specializes in collecting and investigating consumer complaints, has amassed enough complaints about Hartz, Sergeant’s, and Sentry flea and tick products to fill the Grand Canyon. And recently, they put together a thoroughly researched and well written article that you should read, re-read, send to your friends, your vet, your pet groomer, your dog walker, your pet sitter, your Aunt Mary, and everyone else you know. The piece describes the atrocities committed by Hartz et al, who make and sell products that they know are unsafe. It also discusses the failure of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to remove these products from shelves, despite receiving thousands upon thousands of reports of adverse reaction and death in animals treated with the products. The report is here.

I've tried both Hartz and Sergent's on my dogs in the past, needless to say they didn't work. I wonder if Frontline is okay to use? I'm currently using Frontline now to combat fleas. I'm having a horrible time with them. I've had to bomb the entire house which I hate to do but I don't have any choice. Also bathe the dogs every week or so which is a major pain in the you know what. I have to fight with them to get them into the bathtub and then fightwith them to keep them from getting out. It's like they think I'm murdering them or something. It's a never ending battle these fleas (and dogs).

I was looking for some supplies for the new kid in Walmart yesterday, and see they're still selling that Hartz junk. I wouldn't buy anything from that brand. I've had great success with Little City Dogs flea control capsules, which I get on Amazon - they're a generic form of Capstar. (Note, despite the name, they also have them for cats.) The price is very good too; go to Amazon and put "Little City Dogs flea control" in search.

It's good stuff; it works for my guys. For the dogs I just put a slit in a hot dog and give it to them, and what I like is for the cats I can open the capsule and mix the powder inside into their food, so I don't have to deal with trying to give them a pill. The stuff that you put on the back of their necks affects the nervous system; I wouldn't use it.
