Snow was spotted in Surrey and Scotland today as British Summer Time started, while temperatures have fallen as much as -8C as a 1,000 mile-wide mini 'Beast from the East' hits the UK until next week.
The unwelcome weather, which follows a week of glorious sunshine across the country, is sure to dampen moods as scores of Britons stay confined to their homes during the coronavirus lockdown.
Yesterday people were spotted walking, running, and cycling in Britain's parks and on the country's beaches, from London - the engine of the UK's pandemic - to Brighton, Dorset, and Bournemouth.
But the Met Office today is warning of snow flurries in southeastern England, such as in Ashford, Kent, while an inch of snow has settled in part of northern England and Scotland.
Windchills will make 10C days fell like 3C for most people, while temperatures plummet at nighttime down to -6C in the South and -8C in Scotland - colder than -3C Moscow.
The RAC has warned drivers of flat batteries, with spokesman Simon Williams saying: 'Key workers and motorists making essential journeys should beware of cars failing to start after cold nights.'
A 1,000 mile-wide plume of cold easterly air from northern Europe is blowing across the North Sea to Britain. The chill eases on Wednesday but returns on Friday for the weekend, with 'disruptive' snow threatening the North.
The Met Office warned of more snow in early April, even in the South.
Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: 'British Summer Time is starting with easterly winds bringing a late-season mini Beast From the East. It's ironic after mild westerlies through winter.
'Snow flurries were possible on Sunday in the East right down to Essex and Kent, and inland.
