Baptist Newspaper Says Christians Should Wear Masks Because Muslims Do
May 27, 2020 Publisher
By now, if you’re still wearing a ‘coronavirus mask’ you’re an anti-science conspiracy theorist. While the early days of the Great Coronavirus Panic of 2020 made the precautionary accouterment a reasonable measure, the facts are now in…masks do not work to prevent respiratory influenza-like illnesses. Nonetheless, some are still endorsing mask-wearing even if they are not effective health measures because they signal virtue.
We kid you not.
Reformation Charlotte ran a post earlier today about North Carolina Roy Cooper conceding that masks aren’t affecting but still admonishing state residents to wear them because they “signal compassion for others.” But leftist evangelicals don’t want to be left out of the virtue-signaling fun and one Baptist newspaper just ran an op-ed claiming it was our Christian duty to wear masks irrespective of their effectiveness.
Baptist News Global’s article was written by Clare Johnson and entitled While Some Try to Politicize Wearing Face Masks, For Me It’s A Spiritual Decision.
Please note, the article does not argue it’s a medical decision or even a healthy decision, but a spiritual one.
Johnson writes, “I certainly believe we should approach any potential infringement on freedom with caution and skepticism, but if I am labeled a ‘sheep’ for caring for the welfare of my neighbor, I’ll consider it a badge of honor.”
Of course, the term “sheep” is not leveled at those who merely “care about the welfare” of neighbors, but those who think that breathing in their own exhaust will magically prevent the spread of a virus irrespective of medical data that screams otherwise.
She continues…
The face mask debate among Christ followers amid a devasting global pandemic demands that we think deeply about what outward signs signify about inward spiritual grace.
Again, she employes no scientific data, no medical research, and not health benefit. Johnson instead argues that by wearing a mask we “signal” to others that we have grace.
If that doesn’t make sense to you it’s because it doesn’t make sense to anyone. It’s poppycock.
But then, Johnson argues that religions all have curious clothing choices and says that by wearing a mask we can identify with other religions…particularly, Islam.
In every culture, people adorn themselves with religious symbols to signal to others their devotion to a faith tradition. The Muslim head covering is one example, but there are countless others…In these extraordinary days, I have come to view wearing a protective mask while in public as a spiritual practice.
Oofta, as they say in North Dakota.
She ends by saying, “When I wear my mask, my intention is to show that I am a Christ follower who cares for my neighbor above myself. Whether or not other people understand that is less important than whether God understands my heart.”
