GOP Congressman Asks FCC To Ban “Cuties” From Airing on Public Television
September 21, 2020
“Cuties,” the massively controversial, child-exploiting Netflix offering, may face regulatory action if the warnings of one Republican congressman are heeded.
According to Breitbart, Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) urged the Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai to bar any future airing of the film on public television channels on the grounds that the French film qualifies as “obscene material” and would not be protected by the First Amendment.
In a letter on Thursday, Collins called on the FCC to “use its authority to ensure that Cuties is never broadcast on public television channels in the United States.”
Collins goes on to describe the film as “disgusting” and “inappropriate” and declaring that it “will only serve to please pedophiles.”
In the letter, Collins argues that the film, which features a sickening scene in which the four young main characters perform an erotic dance that includes several simulations of sex acts, meets the “Miller” test for obscene material, a standard established by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1973 case Miller v. California.
Collins also argued that the FCC can ban “Cuties” from public television even if it doesn’t meet the Miller standard, citing the 1978 ruling FCC v. Pacifica Foundation which allows the commission to regulate a broadcast that is “indecent.”
Earlier this month, Netflix offered a limp apology—only for marketing images and descriptions of the film, not its actual content—when promotional posters for the film first caught subscribers’ eyes.
The image, Netflix explained in its apology, was not “representative” of the film. A clip of the horrendous dance sequence leaked to social media, however, proved that to be wholly false.
This is not the first time a member of Congress has called on the Fed to step in and address this exploitative film. As we reported earlier this month, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) called on the Department of Justice to open up a formal investigation of Netflix’ decision to distribute the film.
Cotton accused the streaming giant of “peddling child pornography.” Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), Breitbart reports, called the movie “child porn,” and predicted that it will “whet the appetite of pedophiles & help fuel the child sex trafficking trade.”
