MIAMI - TROPICAL Storm Dora was likely to strengthen into a hurricane on Tuesday off Mexico's Pacific coast, where it was expected to batter resorts with dangerous surf, US forecasters said.
The storm, packing sustained winds of 100kmh, was intensifying as it churned to the north-west parallel to the Mexican coast, and while it was still hundreds of miles from shore Dora was forecast to bring 'life-threatening surf' to southern coastlines.
'Additional strengthening is expected during the next 48 hours, and Dora is forecast to become a hurricane later today,' the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said in a statement early on Tuesday.
Three hurricanes have already formed this season in the eastern Pacific.
The season's first named storm, Arlene, left at least 16 people dead in Mexico after it drenched much of the country with heavy rains and left hundreds of thousands homeless.
Mexico was struck last year by what the government described as the wettest rainy season on record. -- AFP
