RED HOOK, NY (PIX11)—
A new sign on Richards Street in Brooklyn, dedicated to honor the seven firefighters that lost their lives on Sept. 11 from Engine 202, Ladder 101, has local atheists demanding a name change.
The sign, unveiled Monday, says "Seven in Heaven", in commemoration of the firefighters who died on 9/11.
"It should be secular, like 'Seven Hero's Way'," said David Silverman, of the American Atheists
Silverman insists that public signs should be non-sectarian and insists there should be a separation between church and state.
"They need to get over it," laughed long-time resident of Red Hook, Wally Bazemore, "Those men are heroes and angels."
Bazemore, who passes the sign each day said, "I bring my sons to the sign everyday and say a prayer. A prayer for those heroes that made the supreme sacrifice," said Bazemore.
"Those atheists can go you know where," said one woman who heard about the complaint.
The sign was a pet project of City Councilmember Sara Gonzalez, who pushed hard to get the change through the city council. She told the Gothamist via her spokesman, Mike Schweinsburg, "The seven heroes have long been known as the 'Seven in Heaven', that's something that we didn't have any hand in, it is the way the community and their families chose to remember them. So if that is their desire then we are happy to continue to remember them in the way that their family and fellow firefighters prefer to call them."
