Looks like the captain abandoned his ship.... Cruise Transcript: 'Get Back on Board for [Expletive] Sake!'ABC NewsABC News – 6 hours ago Cruise Transcript: 'Get Back on Board for [Expletive] Sake!' (ABC News) Audio recording of the conversation between Capt. Francesco Schettino and Port Authority officials after the doomed Italian luxury cruise liner Costa Condcordia struck rocks Friday was released Tuesday morning. At least six people were killed in the aftermath and dozens more are still missing. The follow is a translation of the recording, which was posted on the news website Corriere della Sera. Captain Schettino: It's Capt. Schettino. Port Authority: Schettino, listen to me, there are people trapped onboard, now you go back, you will go with your rescue boat under the stern of the ship, there are some steps, you climb those steps and you get onboard and you get back to me letting me know how many people are on board. Is that clear to you? I am actually recording this conversation captain. [inaudible, captain mumbles] PA: Speak in a loud voice. Captain: So, the ship right now [inaudible]... PA: Speak in a loud voice! Put your hand by the microphone to cover it and speak up! Is that clear? Voices in the background: "Tell him to come here. Tell him to come here." Captain: So, right now the ship is tilted… PA: I understand that. Listen to me, there are people that are getting off using the rope ladder on the stern side, you go back there and you go up that ladder the opposite way, you go onboard the ship and you tell me how many people [are there] And what they need. You tell me if there are children, women or people that need assistance and you give me a number for each one of these categories is that clear? Look Schettino, you may have saved yourself from the sea but will put you through a lot of trouble it will be very bad for you! Get back on board for [expletive]'s sake!!! Captain: Officer, please. PA: There are no "pleases"! Get back on board! Please assure me that you are going back on board. Captain: I am here on the rescue boat. I'm right here, I didn't go anywhere else, I'm here. PA: What are you doing captain? Captain: I'm here to coordinate rescue operations. PA: What are you coordinating? Get back on board and coordinate rescue operations from onboard the ship. [silence, sound cuts out] PA: Do you refuse to do that? Captain: No, I'm not refusing to do that. PA: Are you refusing to back on board? Captain: No, I am not refusing to go back. I am not going because the other rescue boat stopped. PA: Get back on board! This is an order! You don't need to make any other assessment. You have declared that you have abandoned ship, therefore I'm in command. Get back on board right now is that clear? Captain: Officer… PA: Can you not hear me? Captain: I'm getting back on board. PA: Then go! And call me right away when you are on board. There's my rescuer there. Captain: Where is your rescuer? PA: My rescuer is on the stern side, go! There are already bodies, Schettino! Go! Captain: Officer how many bodies are there? PA: I don't know. I know about one… I've heard about one, but you must tell me! [expletive]! Captain: Do you realize it's dark out here and we can't see anything? PA: What do you want to do ? Do you want to go home? It's dark so you want to go home? Get on the stern of that ship climb the ladder and tell me what can be done, how many people are there and what they need. Right now! Captain: I'm here with my second officer. [Schettino identifies second officer.] PA: You and your second officer must get back on board right now is that clear? Captain: I just wanted to tell you that the other rescue boat here with other rescuers stopped. It's just stopped. Now I've called the other rescuers. PA: You've been telling me the same thing for an hour now get back on board! On board! And you get back to me right away telling me how many people are there. Captain: It's fine officer, I'm going. PA: Then go, right now! gma.yahoo.com/cruise-transcript-back-board-expletive-sake-132852020--abc-news.html

Cruise Captain in Court, Did He Abandon Ship?ABC NewsBy BRIAN ROSS and MEGAN CHUCHMACH | ABC News – 8 hours ago Military rescuers patrol next to the Costa Concordia on January 15 after the cruise ship ran aground and keeled over off the Isola del Giglio. Shares in US-based cruise ship operator Carnival slumped after the group admitted that the Costa Concordia disaster could cost the group $85-95 million (67-75 million euros). (AFP Photo/Filippo Monteforte) Military rescuers patrol next to the Costa Concordia on January 15 after the cruise … Italian prosecutors this morning are pushing hard to put the captain of the sinking Italian cruise ship, the Costa Concordia, on trial and behind bars, building a case that his behavior was reckless, cowardly and deadly. Capt. Francesco Schettino, 52, was brought to court this morning after being in custody since Saturday on allegations of manslaughter and abandoning the ship. The luxury cruise ship was carrying more than 4,000 passengers and crew when it struck rocks Friday evening near Giglio, off the coast of Tuscany. Rescue efforts have been ongoing, but as of Monday night, at least 29 people remained unaccounted for. At least six people were killed in the wreck's aftermath. Italian prosecutors said the growing evidence Schettino was responsible for the accident, and then failed to protect his passengers. According to a published account by a cook onboard, a full half hour after the incident, Schettino was still asking for his dinner and drinks and reportedly demanded to know where his female companion's dessert was. Schettino has claimed the ship hit uncharted rocks and that he acted honorably, telling reporters he and his crew were the last to leave. But that's not true according to newly-released audio of port authority radio transmissions to the captain. TRANSCRIPT: 'Get Back on Board for [Expletive] Sake!' "Captain, this is an order, now I am in charge. Get back on that ship and coordinate the operations. There are already casualties," the port authority official reportedly told Schettino. "How many?" the captain responded. "You should tell me that! What do you want to do, go home? Now you get back on that ship and tell us what can be done, how many people are still there and what do they need," the port authority official said. "OK, OK, I am going," Schettino said. Follow BrianRoss on Twitter As a captain for the Costa line since 2006, the year the Concordia was launched, the dark-haired, debonair Schettino was described as a favorite with passengers, especially women. But if it is true that he and other officers fled the ship, leaving passengers behind, it would be a clear violation of what is regarded as the first law of the sea. "The captain is the last person to leave the sinking ship," veteran cruise ship commander Capt. William Wright told ABC News. "I find it very hard to understand how any captain under such dire circumstances would elect to leave his vessel." Follow ABCNewsBlotter on Facebook The Costa line said the captain was wrong to steer so close to the island, although this video from Italian TV is said to show the Concordia, horns blaring one night last August, sailing within a few hundred feet of the island -- a course the Costa line says was authorized and approved in advance. Prosecutors, however, said Schettino went beyond authorized procedure and was a reckless show-boater. "You want to screen out the risk takers," marine legal expert John Hickey said. "You want to screen out the hot doggers. You want to screen out people who are not willing to take responsibility. gma.yahoo.com/cruise-captain-court-did-abandon-ship-120224966--abc-news.html

Moldovan with ship captain defends his actionsAssociated PressBy COLLEEN BARRY and NICOLE WINFIELD | Associated Press – 1 hr 38 mins ago ROME (AP) — A young Moldovan woman who says she was with the captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship after it rammed into a Tuscan reef emerged as a potential new witness Thursday in the investigation into the captain's actions that night. Crew members and passengers have said Capt. Francesco Schettino ate dinner with a woman in the ship's restaurant Friday night, and Italian news reports have said prosecutors want to interview her. Schettino, who was jailed after he left the ship before everyone was safely evacuated, is under house arrest, facing possible charges of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his ship. Ship owner Costa Crociere SpA says he made an unauthorized deviation from the ship's programmed course that brought him too close to the reefs off the tiny island of Giglio. The ship capsized a few miles away in Giglio's port, forcing the chaotic evacuation of the 4,200 people on board. Eleven people have been confirmed dead and 21 others are still missing. Divers resumed searching for the missing Thursday as a new audiotape emerged of the Concordia's first communication with port officials who inquired about what was wrong. In the tape, an officer insists the ship had only experienced a blackout — comments that came a full 30 minutes after the ship rammed violently into the reef. Dominica Cermotan, a 25-year-old Moldovan hostess who said she was working for Costa on the Concordia, said on her Facebook page that she wasn't on duty the night of the grounding but was with Schettino, other officers and the cruise director on the bridge. She said she was called to help with translations of instructions for how the small number of Russian passengers should evacuate. "We were looking for them, searching for them (the Russians)," she said in an interview with Moldova's Jurnal TV. "We heard them all crying, shouting in all languages." She defended Schettino, saying "he did a great thing, he saved over 3,000 lives," and added he stayed on deck until 11:50 p.m. The ship hit the reef at 9:45 p.m. Prosecutor Francesco Verusio declined to comment on whether he was seeking Cermotan as a witness, citing the ongoing investigation. Costa said in a statement that a woman embarked on the ship earlier Friday in the port of Civitavecchia. Without providing her name, Costa said the woman was registered with the ship and that the company was prepared to provide to authorities both her identity and paperwork for the ticket. www.livescience.com/18004-costa-concordia-titanic-comparison.htmlThe hectic evacuation of the sinking cruise liner Costa Concordia has been compared with the likes of the disastrous Titanic disaster. In fact, Swiss survivors even told the newspaper La Tribune de Genève that Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On," the theme song to the 1997 film "Titanic," was playing in their dining room as the ship hit the rocks. So how do the two shipwrecks match up? While the loss of life on the Titanic was much worse than on the Costa Concordia, even the Titanic's poorly planned evacuation may have been less chaotic than the one off the Tuscan coast. By the numbers, here's a side-by-side look at the two cruise ship disasters: Date of wrecks: The Titanic went down on April 15, 1912. The Costa Concordia capsized on Jan.13, 2012. Size of ships: The Titanic was 882 feet and 8 inches long (268 meters) and had a tonnage of 46,000. The Costa Concordia was larger, with a tonnage of 114,500 and a length of 951 feet and 5 inches (290 m). The width of the Titanic was 92.5 feet (28 m), compared with 118 feet (36 m) for the Costa Concordia. Bragging rights: The Titanic was the largest ship of her day. The Costa Concordia had the largest spa center ever built on a cruise ship. People on board: 2,201 people were aboard the Titanic when it sunk, and 4,200 were aboard the Costa Concordia. Cause of wreck: The Titanic famously hit an iceberg on its starboard side in the middle of the North Atlantic, while the Costa Concordia struck a rock on its port side when the captain brought the ship in close to the Tuscan island of Giglio in the Mediterranean Sea. Lifeboat capacity: The Titanic's lifeboats could have carried no more than 1,178 people. Nowadays, according to the International Maritime Organization, ships are required to have plenty of lifeboat space, with enough lifeboats hanging off the port side to accommodate half of the passengers, enough on the starboard side to accommodate the other half, and room for 25 percent more of the ship's passengers in inflatable rafts stored onboard. [Titanic Quiz: Fact or Fiction?] "The Costa Concordia had sufficient lifeboat space, as far as we know, by the regulations she operates under," said Charles Weeks, an emeritus professor of marine transportation at the Maine Maritime Academy, and a member of the Titanic International Society. Unlike the Titanic, which lacked sufficient staff at lifeboat muster points, the Costa Concordia seemed to have crew supervision at the lifeboat stations, he said. The delay in lowering the lifeboats, which occurred about 45 minutes to an hour after the ship hit the rocks, may have been the captain's call, he said. "There may have been a perfectly valid reason why he waited so long," Weeks told LiveScience. "You don't want to put lifeboats in the water while the ship is still making way. That can be very hazardous." Time it took to sink: The Titanic went down over a period of two hours and 40 minutes. The Costa Concordia began listing about 20 minutes after it hit a rock near Giglio Island and was completely on its side within about three hours. Depth of the wreck: The Titanic lay on the seafloor 12,460 feet (3,798 m) below the surface. The Costa Concordia essentially ran aground and is now half-submerged — the ship is unable to float in water less than 26 feet (8 m) deep. Temperature of water: The passengers of the Titanic unlucky enough to end up in the water likely perished in a few short minutes, as the water temperature was just 28 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 2 degrees Celsius). According to Accuweather, the air temperature when the Costa Concordia crashed was in the mid-to-low 40s Fahrenheit. The water temperature was in the mid- to upper-50s. In 50-degree water, hypothermia sets in quickly; boating guides put the time at about 60 minutes until exhaustion or unconsciousness, with death following within three hours. Loss of life: Only 711 of the passengers aboard the Titanic were rescued, resulting in a death toll of 1,514, according to the British Wreck Commissioner's Inquiry. As of today (Jan. 18), an estimated 11 Costa Concordia passengers were confirmed dead, with 23 still missing. Fate of the captain: Edward J. Smith, the captain of the Titanic, went down with his ship. His body was never found. The Costa Concordia captain, Francesco Schettino, allegedly left the ship with passengers still onboard. He claims he tripped and fell into a lifeboat while coordinating the evacuation and could not get back on the ship. A transcript of a phone conversation between Schettino and a coast guard officer reveals the officer insisting Schettino return to the ship, and the captain refusing. Schettino is now under house arrest and is being investigated for manslaughter. The standard of the captain being the last person to leave a crippled ship serves two purposes, Weeks said. First, it's the captain's job to take care of everyone else on the boat. Second, if a captain stays with a damaged ship, he can protect the ship owner's interests. If the captain is still on the boat, the owners can arrange a towing contract to get the vessel back to port, Weeks said. If the ship is abandoned, it must be salvaged, which can be a more complicated and costly process for the owners. Big evacuation foul-ups: Hundreds of Titanic passengers never had a chance at survival, given the lack of lifeboat space available. Not only that, but a U.S. inquiry into the disaster found that the evacuation process was a mess: There was no system for loading the boats, and many of the boats went down partially filled (though there was space for 1,176 people on the boats, only about 700 made it onto one). Additionally, the loss of life would have been much worse had the weather have been rough, the panel found. With the lifeboats suspended 70 feet (21 m) above the ocean, rough waters would have made lowering them without smashing them against the ship impossible. On the other hand, all reports indicate very little panic during the Titanic evacuation, at least not until the very end. This is likely because most passengers didn't realize the seriousness of the situation, Weeks said. There are reports of passengers refusing to get on the lifeboats, choosing instead to stay in the warmth and light of the doomed ship. The same cannot be said of the Costa Concordia evacuation, which survivors describe as chaotic. "It was every man for himself," one survivor told French News outlet France 24. Crew members reportedly panicked and jumped aboard lifeboats before passengers. The Costa Concordia listed to one side, in contrast with the Titanic, which tilted forward, her bow in the water. That may have made the Concordia sinking seem more dramatic than the sinking of the Titanic, at least from the perspective of those onboard. "A ship that lists to one side is far more dramatic than a ship that trims down by the head," Weeks said. The evacuation of the Costa Concordia was delayed, with passengers initially informed that the ship was having a minor electrical problem. There had been no evacuation drill onboard — it was scheduled for Saturday — so passengers were confused. Many of the crew did not speak Italian and could not communicate with their charges. Some cruise-goers reported being on lifeboats captained by waiters and other support staff. Weeks said reports of the crew's behavior still needed confirmation, but said that such a situation is not without precedent. The cruise ship Oceanus, for example, sank off the South African Coast in 1991. "The social director wound up overseeing the evacuation of the passengers," Weeks said. "The captain and certain members of the crew went off in the first lifeboat." You can follow LiveScience senior writer Stephanie Pappas on Twitter @sipappas. The human bridge created by British dancer James Thomas and the bizarre antics of captain Francesco Schettino pale in comparison to the claims of two Swiss brothers. For they have revealed how the theme tune from the film Titanic was playing onboard as it struck rocks and started to keel over. Eerie: Costa Concordia passengers say Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On, from the film Titanic starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, was playing in a restaurant as the ship went down Eerie: Costa Concordia passengers say Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On, from the film Titanic starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, was playing in a restaurant as the ship went down They said survivors of the disaster were 'astonished' by the eerie coincidence which saw them listening to Celine Dion's hit My Heart Will Go On as the cruise ship began to founder. The song was made internationally famous in 1997 as the theme of James Cameron’s epic movie about the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet. More... Valentina Capuano, 30, said she was 'dumbstruck' that history was repeating itself when the giant Italian ship began sinking on Friday night. Her grandmother and great uncle had both been aboard the Titanic when it sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton to new York in 1912. Her grandmother survived but her great uncle Giovanni - working as a waiter aboard the ship - was one of the 1,517 people who died. Ms Capuano was travelling with her fiance, her brother and his girlfriend when the 140,000 tonne vessel struck rocks off the Italian island of Giglio. She said: 'It was like re-living history, it was horrible, I was really shocked. I am still shaken up and get very upset when I think about what I've been through, I have heart palpitations.' He said the tune was 'stuck in my head' as most crew members did absolutely nothing to help them. He added: 'Besides kitchen staff, who helped, there were no other crew members.' Georg Linsi, who is also Swiss, told the Geneva paper La Tribune: 'The evacuation was a catastrophe within a catastrophe. 'Never in my life have I seen such a display of incompetence, lack of awareness and irresponsibility. 'When the boat started to lean to the left, we held onto the right side. Besides one young sailor, there was not a single crew member near the life boats who was able to organise the evacuation.' As the ship began to bank, he said 'hundreds of people were inside without information, with no indication of what to do. 'There was so much panic when the boat was so steeply inclined that we had to walk on the walls. We remained inside for three hours before managing to get out, and were able to leave the ship via a flexible ladder and reached the a coast guard vessel.' The Titanic sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. A total of 1,517 people died. www.titanicuniverse.com/the-titanic-conspiracyTitanic Conspiracy 29 This is only one part of a larger picture. For more information, please read Investigating The Titanic Conspiracy and The James Cameron Conspiracy. Do you still remember the Hollywood block-buster movie film TITANIC with actor Leonardo de Caprio? Well, it is not the real story or perhaps just a part of the story. What you’ll read below is the true story as to what really happened to the famous ship called Titanic. The information you’ll read below is not a conspiracy theory, but rather well-recorded in the books of World History. Sinking of the TitanicThe sinking of the Titanic has always been an event surrounded by a great deal of mystery. Elements that led up to the eventual demise of the ‘unsinkable’ vessel have been questioned and analyzed for nearly 100 years. Many believe that fate brought the maiden voyage of the Titanic to an end, others believe that reckless tactics throughout the voyage played the primary role in her sinking, and others still believe that the Titanic tragedy was brought upon by much more sinister events. One of many Titanic conspiracies floating around, many believe that the sinking of the famous vessel was well planned, well executed, and orchestrated shape the world as we know it today. This is the Federal Reserve Titanic conspiracy. Certain conspiracy theorists believe that there was a force behind the sinking of the Titanic. A Catholic order known as the Jesuits compelled to carry out Jesus’ work. In this instance, theorists believe that the establishment of the U.S. Federal Reserve was ushered into being. Those in belief of the theory speak of a group of Illuminati, enlightened individuals with a plan for a New World Order, in which it will be necessary to establish the Federal Reserve. Many are unclear on what exactly the Federal Reserve is. Operated outside of the constraints of the U.S. government, the Federal Reserve has these responsibilities. 1. Conducting the nation’s monetary policy by influencing monetary and credit conditions in the economy in pursuit of maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates. 2. Supervising and regulating banking institutions to ensure the safety and soundness of the nation’s banking and financial system, and protect the credit rights of consumers. 3. Maintaining stability of the financial system and containing systemic risk that may arise in financial markets. 4. Providing financial services to depository institutions, the U.S. government, and foreign official institutions, including playing a major role in operating the nation’s payments system. Jesuit SealTheorists believe that this Jesuit establishment was created so that the order could loan money, shape the world landscape, and become one of the most powerful organizations in the world. Here’s how the Federal Reserve and the Titanic are connected. In 1910, seven men met on Jekyll island just off the coast of Georgia to plan the Federal Reserve Bank. Nelson Aldrich and Frank Vanderclip represented the Rockefeller (Illuminati) financial empire. Henry Davidson, Charles Norton and Benjamin Strong represented J.P. Morgan (Illuminati). Paul Warburg (Illuminati) represented the Rothschilds (Illuminati) Banking dynasty of Europe. The Rothschilds were the banking agents for the Jesuits and hold `the key to the wealth of the Roman Catholic Church.’ Necessary to their plans, the Federal Reserve did have some opposition; those who saw what the future would become if banking was outside of the government’s hands, the rates set by a private company such as the Fed. All the wealthy and powerful men the Jesuits wanted to get rid of were invited to take the cruise. Three of the richest and most important of these were Benjamin Guggenheim, Isador Strauss, the head of Macy’s Department Stores, and John Jacob Astor, probably the wealthiest man in the world. Their total wealth, at that time, using dollar values of their day was more than 500 million dollars. Today that amount of money would be worth nearly eleven billion dollars. These three men were coaxed and encouraged to board the floating palace. They had to be destroyed because the Jesuits knew they would use their wealth and influence to oppose a Federal Reserve Bank as well as the various wars that were being planned. It can also be mentioned that J.P. Morgan, the individual contracted to build the Titanic was scheduled to be on the maiden voyage, but canceled. Supporters of the idea that the Titanic shipwreck was orchestrated carefully, a Jesuit tempore co-adjutor was picked to captain the ship, a man that would do anything for the order and God’s will; Captain Edward Smith. Quite possibly the most experienced captain of the time, Smith had navigated the waters of the Atlantic for 26 years, a master of the icy waters that the Titanic would be sailing. He was a Jesuit and worked for J.P. Morgan. As National Geographic stated in their 1986 documentary entitilted ‘The Secrets of the Titanic,’ “Anyone could be a Jesuit and their identity not be known.†When the ship departed southern England, on board was Father Francis Browne. He was the most powerful Jesuit in all of Ireland and the Jesuit Master of Edward Smith. Here is Jesuit treachery at its finest. The provincial Father Francis Browne boards the Titanic, photographs the victims, most assuredly briefs the Captain concerning his oath as a Jesuit, and the following morning bids him farewell. (Eric J. Phelps, Vatican Assassins Halcon Unified Services). Theorists believe that the mysteries surrounding the sinking of the Titanic are simply too coincidental not to be premeditated. Smith, being a mater navigator of the Atlantic, allegedly sailed directly into iceberg territory, failing to heed the numerous warnings given by other ships to decrease speed, and tread carefully. The glancing blow to the side of the Titanic is also said to violate basic safety measurements associated with sailing. Danger is meant to be met head on to avoid exactly what happened to the Titanic. Less well known: the Titanic’s flare guns fired white flares. Red was (and is) the emergency standard. Other colors were used for identification (white = White Star Line). When the Titanic was sinking, her crew fired her flare guns. The Californian and other ships saw the white flares, but didn’t consider them a distress call. At one point, the Californian, commanded by Captain Lord, may have been as close as six miles to the stricken vessel. Titanic Flare Gun Conspiracy According to other websites, the box containing this gun was the box taken off the Titanic by one of the ship’s crew on that fateful April night. The box contained . . . an unused flare gun. Clearly, the Five Shot, 33 Pinfire Derringer Revolver here does NOT fit this case. What happened to the Titanic’s flare gun contained therein? It was most probably destroyed as part of White Star Line’s cover-up of the failures leading to the disaster. Someone kept the box for decades. Did they keep the flare gun? All three men, whom were opposed to the Federal Reserve, died during the sinking of the Titanic. The Federal Reserve is installed as part of the Federal Reserve act in December of 1913, roughly a year and eight months after the Titanic tragedy, and World War I less than a year later. Theorists believe that the Federal Reserve and the Jesuits were responsible for funding the United States, Germany, and Russia in the war.

I'm sure the survivors are clamoring for another cruise, especially one from this company... Costa Concordia: 'insulting' cruise offer to survivorsThe owners of the Costa Concordia are offering survivors of the disaster a 30 per cent discount off future cruises as they battle to stave off law suits expected to cost hundreds of millions of pounds. Costa Concordia: 'insulting' cruise offer to survivors Image 1 of 7 PHOTOS AT LINKDramatic new photographs show terrified passengers clambering across the side and hull of the stricken Costa Concordia after its captain steered the liner on to reefs Photo: CAMERA PRESS / PARIS MATCH / EMILIE BLACHERE By Claire Duffin, Robert Mendick, Nick Squires in Giglio and Victoria Ward in Meta di Sorrento 10:00PM GMT 21 Jan 2012 One British survivor of the disaster, which claimed 12 lives with 20 people still missing, branded the offer as "insulting". It was disclosed that in an attempt to help survivors the ship's parent company, Carnival, has been telephoning passengers daily asking if they are suffering nightmares or sleepless nights. But that move also appeared to backfire when a psychologist said such questioning could trigger post traumatic stress rather than relieve it. A little over a week after the ship capsized off the coast of Tuscany, it also emerged that: • An emergency services log showed that the Concordia's captain, Francisco Schettino, abandoned ship more than four hours before the last passenger. • A separate voice recording showed Capt Schettino pledging to be the last man on the ship, suggesting erratic behaviour and that he lied to the authorities. • Divers recovered the ship's safe from the captain's cabin along with the body of a woman they found in a submerged corridor The offer for future discounts is being made by Costa Cruises, which operated the Concordia and whose parent company is Carnival, the world's largest cruise operator. Passengers were also being sent letters by Costa detailing how to claim for lost valuables and offering a full refund on the voyage. Lawyers plan to sue both in the US and in Italy, with more than 100 passengers already reported to have joined a class action that is to be lodged in Miami this week. Each is reported to be demanding between £100,000 and £1 million in compensation. A spokesman for Costa Cruises said: "The company is trying to do everything they can for those passengers directly affected. "The company is not only going to refund everybody but they will offer a 30 per cent discount on future cruises if they want to stay loyal to the company." Costa's chief executive, Pier Luigi Foschi, who estimated that the impact of the disaster on his firm was £60 million, had expressed confidence that the group would be able to "find a solution that, in the material sense, would satisfy" the passengers. However, Brian Page, 63, a retired accountant from Southampton, who survived by sliding from one side of the deck to another to find a lifeboat, said: "It is a ridiculous and insulting offer. I'm very disappointed in them. "They are not accepting their responsibilities at all. Our only back-up is separate legal action." Costa Cruises has laid the blame on Capt Schettino, who steered the liner on to rocks and then abandoned ship before all the passengers got off. But lawyers for the passengers will claim that Costa Cruise ships had "regularly" deviated from the correct route. The ongoing civil legal battle is complicated by the criminal case against Capt Schettino and the specific contracts signed by passengers. Last week, Carnival began phoning British passengers asking if they were suffering nightmares, sleepless nights and needed counselling. Mr Page and other passengers, including Janice and Ian Donoff, from north London, and Edwin and Liz Gurd, from Hampshire, received calls. Lawyers, however, have questioned the company's motives. Clive Garner, head of the travel law team at Irwin Mitchell, who represents at least one British passenger, said: "I would advise Carnival to desist from doing this. "In other large-scale incidents, defendants have been very keen to liaise with victims early on with a view to making low offers of settlement." Jill Greenfield, a personal injury partner at Field Fisher Waterhouse who has successfully sued Carnival in the past, said: "The poor people on this ship will still be in shock and not yet realise what they have been through. "It may be that Carnival are genuinely trying to help but what they should be doing is telling these people to get some legal advice." Jennifer Wild, a consultant clinical psychologist at Oxford University and King's College London, said repeatedly asking victims if they were having nightmares breached guidelines on treating people after disasters. The questions are likely to feed anxiety and possibly even lead to post-traumatic stress, she said. "They may be doing it because they just want to monitor people but this is not helpful," she said. Further details of Capt Schettino's erratic behaviour were disclosed with the publication of the official log kept by the harbour master's office, which coordinated the rescue. The log shows how the captain, who is under house arrest, first played down the crisis and then abandoned ship more than four hours before the last passenger. Further voice recordings add to the confusion, with Capt Schettino claiming to coastguards that he will remain on ship as the last man. "I'm the only one who will stay here," he told the coastguards in a tape that will be used by prosecutors to support their contention that he lied to port authorities on the night of the disaster and that he abandoned his post in contravention of the naval code. Divers exploring the cruise ship recovered a safe from the captain's cabin on the instructions of the prosecutors. They believe it may contain documents or other evidence that could help their investigation. The body of a 12th victim was found inside the hull of the £370 million, 1,000ft vessel. The victim, a woman, was found wearing a life jacket on the fourth deck, close to a muster station.
