US President Biden is considering visiting East Jerusalem as part of his tour of Israel. The possibility arose during preparatory meetings ahead of next month's planned visit.
This has political implications - an American president visiting the eastern part of the Israeli capital - and in fact 'divides Jerusalem'. Even Democratic presidents Obama and Clinton have not gone so far as to pay a visit that expresses a lack of recognition of Israel's sovereignty over East Jerusalem.
One of President Biden's election promises was to open a consulate for the Palestinians in East Jerusalem, a move his entire Israeli leadership, led by Prime Minister Bennett and Foreign Minister Lapid, oppose.
