Canadian company TC Energy, which operates the Keystone oil pipeline that connects Canada to the US, confirmed on Thursday that the pipeline was shut down due to a leak seen in Nebraska.
"We shut down the Keystone pipeline network and mobilized our personnel and equipment" because of an oil spill in a river about 20 miles (32 km) south of Steele City.
The alarm was raised at around 8pm on Wednesday when a drop in pressure was observed in the system, TV Energy said. The section of pipeline where the leak was found was isolated and dams were installed to control contamination.
The company has not detailed the scope or cause of the leak, but pledged to release more information as soon as possible.
The price of American WTI crude, for January delivery, recorded a rise of 4.04%, to 74.92 dollars, around 15:55 on Thursday (Greece time).
The nearly 3,500-kilometer Keystone pipeline carries oil from Alberta in western Canada to various destinations in the US, including the Cussing terminal in Oklahoma, where WTI is stored in huge tanks.
The controversial pipeline expansion plan, the so-called Keystone XL, was rejected in June 2021 by US President Joe Biden and subsequently abandoned by TC Energy.
