Sad to say, a lot of Christian fiction is pap - poorly written, weak story lines, and they often come off with a cloyingly sweet and/or corny pseudo-holiness (which comes off as holabout them. I never enjoyed them much...until I discovered the work of Bodie and Brock Thoene. Bodie does the writing, and Brock does the historical research - they're an unbeatable team!
The Zion Covenant is a series of six books: Vienna Prelude, Prague Counterpoint, Munich Signature, London Refrain, Danzig Passage, and [Warsaw Requiem./i]
With The Zion Covenant series - covering Europe and Palestine during WWII - the Thoenes capture the best and worst of the human spirit. From Vienna Prelude to Warsaw Requiem, you will cry tears of joy and sorrow, as these characters will become as real to you as the people you meet every day. The storyline will leave you on the edge of your seat and pull you into another world; there are many plots and subplots: murder, suspense, history, drama, comedy, culture, characters for every reader to recognize as themselves, powerful love stories - Bodie Thoene is one of the best writers of historical fiction whose work I've ever read, Christian or not. These books are also enjoyable for those who love to travel; you will come to know the varied flavors and distinctly different cultures of Czechoslovakia, Israel, Germany, Austria, and America; you will be richer for having read these books.
Perhaps the best thing about The Thoenes is that in this series they give a portrait of Christianity in action. You don't see a bunch of holier-than-thou types taking refuge in bumper-sticker theology; the Christians in Europe/Palestine had no time for such drivel - they were too busy sticking their necks out to make a difference, while others who claimed to be Christians were hanging the Jews out to dry, or - worse - actively participating in their deaths.
I've read the series at least three times, and in each successive reading it's been as fresh and enjoyable as the first time. I've been a student of WW II history since I was a child, and can tell you the Brock Thoene's research is impeccable; you'll learn much as you devour the books - I particularly enjoy the little, everyday details that history books don't cover. Not a lover of history? No matter - there's something in these books for everyone. Better reading than this is hard to come by!
