It's been quite a while since I went to a movie, but a number of friends said Flight was a really good story and, given my love for flying, I couldn't resist seeing a film about a fellow pilot.
First, the good: The story has a powerful message about how drinking and drugs bring people into bondage and destroy their lives; it's a story of truth, and of redemption (in a physical sense). There were a number of characters who were Christians, with one trying to share Whip's (the main character) need for Jesus, but some of them - specifically the co-pilot and his wife - were shown as self-righteous weirdos.
The bad: There was profanity - although it wasn't gratuitous. I mean, if someone is in a plane and everything that can go wrong is going wrong, well, let's be honest: they're not going to say, "Oh good golly, hecky darn!" There were a couple of holes in the story that you could fly a 747 through: every plane is thoroughly inspected between flights to make certain that everything is functioning properly, and the likelihood of so many things going wrong on one flight is pretty much nil. Anther flaw: the self-righteous Christian co-pilot noticed that Whip, the pilot, was drunk and reeked of alcohol, yet he flew with him anyway. In real life, any member of a flight crew who is aware that another member (especially the pilot!) is impaired is required by law to report them to the ground crew so they can be removed from the plane; failure to do so puts passengers' lives in jeopardy, and could result in their being fired.
The ugly: This sort of thing really makes me angry! The opening scenes showed some nudity, which was totally unnecessary and completely uncalled for. This was the primary cause of the film being given an "R" rating, so a lot of young people who would have benefited from seeing this story, didn't.
The bottom line: Excellent story line, great message about finding freedom from bondage- but make it a point to miss the first 3-5 minutes.
