An Eurasian Economic Union May Emerge Soon

I don't think a lot of people outside of Russia are aware that Russia is currently working with its neighbors to launch a “Eurasian Economic Union” by 2013. Russia’s current prime minister and former (and perhaps next) president, Vladimir Putin, is determined to launch the Eurasian Economic Union as soon as possible. Putin told a group of journalists recently:
"We are hoping to sign as early as next year a declaration about the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union, which can and must start operating as early as 2013,"
Today I provide an preview of the upcoming Eurasian Economic Union and briefly discuss why it might be something to keep an eye on in the future.
There is currently an international organization in place called the “Eurasian Economic Community”, whose main purpose is to promote economic integration amongst its members, including the creation of a customs union (a trade bloc where each member country charges a common tariff to countries outside the bloc and trade freely with each other) and a common economic space.[1]
There are currently five active members which belong to the Eurasian Economic Community:
Russia
Tajikistan
Kazakhstan
Kyrgyzstan
Belarus
In addition, Moldova, Ukraine, and Armenia have “observer” status, which enable them to participate some of the organization’s activities.
The launch of the Eurasian Economic Union would represent a significant step in economic integration of the participants involved in its launch and a step beyond the original purpose of the Eurasian Economic Community. There is generally thought to be five levels of economic integration.
The launch of the Eurasian Economic Union could bring its participants past the third level of economic integration depending on the details that are eventually agreed to. As an aside, Putin claimed that the participants would be in “the fourth stage of integration”.
As a point of reference, a customs union, which recall is one of the main objectives of the Eurasian Economic Community, is at the second level of economic integration. The European Union is near or at the fourth level of economic integration with much of its members participating in a monetary union.
The Eurasian Economic Union likely is going to begin with the following three countries if/when it launches:
Russia
Kazakhstan (one of the world's larger oil producers)
Belarus
However, the potential exists for the Eurasian Economic Union to add more countries later on. For instance, some of the countries associated with the Eurasian Economic Community could potentially join the Eurasian Economic Union later on.
What compelled me to talk about the Eurasian Economic Union today is this recent video from STRATFOR, a highly-regarded intelligence service. The STRATOR analyst speaking in the video suggests that the Eurasian Economic Union is a tool of Russia to expand its influence in Eurasia and that economic integration could be accompanied by security cooperation eventually: Link
I thought it was useful to alert people to the potential emergence of the Eurasian Economic Union because there are a sizable number of people who believe that the Antichrist could eventually arise from Russia and a sizeable number of people who believe that Russia could potentially be a significant End Times player.
As STRATFOR suggested, Russia may be able to enhance its power and influence if the Eurasian Economic Union comes into fruition. The enhanced power and influence could help a future leader of Russia wield greater political influence on other member countries since these countries would become more dependent on Russia economically as members of the union.
The significance of the Eurasian Economic Union grows as the number of member countries grows since it may increase the number of countries that Russia may able to strongly influence.
As the STRATFOR analyst cautioned in the video, there is a chance that the Eurasian Economic Union does not arise. However, Vladimir Putin’s desire to launch the Eurasian Economic Union as soon as possible suggests that the organization is likely going to arise if Vladimir Putin has anything to do with it (which he does).
