Violence Spiraling Out of Control in France: Massive Police Deployment Fails to Quell Burnings

The French government is considering “all options” including a nationwide state of emergency after another night of violence which saw hundreds of arrests and injured police officers, and thousands of fires, including many symbols of the state including town halls, schools, post offices, and buses destroyed.



Some 40,000 police officers were deployed across France on Thursday night in an attempt to forestall a third night of violence triggered by the death on Tuesday of a delivery driver at the hands of a police officer in a Paris suburb after he refused to comply with a traffic stop. Yet the enormous show of force by the French state failed to prevent even greater levels of destruction.



Per France’s Le Figaro reports there were 875 arrests overnight nationwide, which saw protest and violence spread to urban areas across the country and even to neighbouring Belgium, the home of the European Union. Figures that underline the considerable scale of the attacks reveal there were some 3,880 fires set overnight, 249 police officers injured — although none seriously — and 492 buildings damaged.

Among those buildings damaged were several town halls and schools burnt out, reports state. Le Parisien cites the Interior Ministry to report 80 police stations were damaged overnight, 34 town halls burnt or otherwise damaged, 28 schools, and 57 other state buildings nationwide. Attacks on symbols of the state appeared so targeted even individual post-boxes were attacked. President of the French Republican Party Eric Ciotti posted footage to social media that claimed to show a French mayor being attacked by a mob as his car was set on fire.



In Marseille, two off-duty police officers were recognised out of uniform and were “seriously injured” in what has been described as a “lynching”.



Looting of businesses including gas stations, tobacconists, and apparel stores has also been reported. In one Parisian suburb, a truck was used to ram down the doors of a shopping centre so looters could access the stores inside.



While French President Emmanuel Macron has been criticised for being absent during the riots — he even grabbed headlines for partying with Elton John on Wednesday night while French cities burnt — he has now left a European summit early to return to Paris and host an emergency government meeting. The government will leave nothing off the table to restore order, Macron’s Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said, eyeing a potential declaration of a state of emergency.



French media has made repeated comparisons of the present violence to the riots of 2005, which as stated were of such intensity have become the yardstick against which all urban unrest in the country has been compared since.

Macron Cancels Trip to Germany as Race-Fuelled Riots Rage On

NANTERRE, France (AP) – President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday scrapped an official trip to Germany after a fourth straight night of rioting and looting across France in defiance of a massive police deployment. Hundreds turned out for the burial of the 17-year-old whose killing by police triggered the unrest.



France’s Interior Ministry announced that in the latest night of violence, 1,311 people had been arrested around the country, where 45,000 police officers fanned out in a so-far unsuccessful bid to restore order. In the violence sparked by the teen’s death on Tuesday, some 2,400 persons have been arrested overall.



The protesters and rioters turned out on the streets of cities and towns, clashing with police, despite Macron’s appeal to parents to keep their children at home. About 2,500 fires were set and stores were ransacked, according to authorities.



The violence in France was taking a toll on Macron’s diplomatic profile. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s office said that Macron phoned on Saturday to request a postponement of what would have been the first state visit by a French president to Germany in 23 years. Macron had been scheduled to fly to Germany on Sunday evening for the visit to Berlin and two other German cities.



Macron’s office said he spoke with Steinmeier and, “given the internal security situation, the president (Macron) said he wishes to stay in France over the coming days.”



Given the importance of the French-German relationship on the European political scene, the scrapping of the official trip was a clear sign of the gravity of France’s unrest. Earlier this year, King Charles III canceled his first foreign visit as U.K. monarch, initially planned for France, because of intense protests over Macron’s pension reform plans.

The teen, identified only as Nahel, was shot during a traffic stop Tuesday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. Video showed two officers at the window of the car, one with his gun pointed at the driver. As the teenager pulled forward, the officer fired once through the windshield.



Rituals to bid farewell to Nahel began on Saturday with a viewing of the open coffin by family and friends and culminated with his burial in a hilltop cemetery in that town.



At the cemetery’s entrance, with central Paris visible in the distance, hundreds of people stood along the road to pay tribute to Nahel. The crowd carried his white casket above their heads and into the cemetery for the burial, which was barred to the media. Some of the men carried folded prayer rugs. Before the burial, prayers were held at a mosque.



Applause resounded as Nahel’s mother Mounia M., dressed in white, walked through the gate and toward the grave. Earlier in the week she told France 5 television that she was angry at the officer who shot her son, but not at the police in general.

“He saw a little Arab-looking kid, he wanted to take his life,” she said. “A police officer cannot take his gun and fire at our children, take our children’s lives,” she said. Race was a taboo topic for decades in France, which is officially committed to a doctrine of colorblind universalism. The family has roots in Algeria.



The police officer accused of killing Nahel was given a preliminary charge of voluntary homicide, meaning that investigating magistrates strongly suspect wrongdoing, but need to investigate more before sending a case to trial. Nanterre prosecutor Pascal Prache said that his initial investigation led him to conclude that the officer’s use of his weapon wasn’t legally justified.



Anger over Nahel’s death erupted in violence in Nanterre and in many major cities, including Paris, Marseille and Lyon, and even in the French territories overseas, where a 54-year-old died after being hit by a stray bullet in French Guiana.

Hundreds of police and firefighters have been injured, including 79 overnight. Authorities haven’t released injury tallies for protesters.



The reaction to the killing was a potent reminder of the persistent poverty, discrimination, unemployment and other lack of opportunity in neighborhoods around France where many residents trace their roots to former French colonies — like where Nahel grew up.



“Nahel’s story is the lighter that ignited the gas. Hopeless young people were waiting for it. We lack housing and jobs, and when we have (jobs), our wages are too low,” said Samba Seck, a 39-year-old transportation worker in the Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois.



Clichy was the birthplace of weeks of riots in 2005 that shook France, prompted by the deaths of two teenagers electrocuted in a power substation while fleeing from police. One of the boys lived in the same housing project as Seck.



Like many Clichy residents, he lamented the violence targeting his town, where the remains of a burned car stood beneath his apartment building, and the town hall entrance was set alight in rioting this week.



“Young people break everything, but we are already poor, we have nothing,” he said, adding that “young people are afraid to die at the hands of police.”



France’s national soccer team – including international star Kylian Mbappe, an idol to many young people in the disadvantaged neighborhoods where the anger is rooted – pleaded for an end to the violence.



“Many of us are from working-class neighborhoods, we too share this feeling of pain and sadness” over the killing of Nahel, the players said in a statement.



Early on Saturday, firefighters in Nanterre extinguished blazes set by protesters that left scorched remains of cars strewn across the streets. In the neighboring suburb Colombes, protesters overturned garbage bins and used them for makeshift barricades.



Looters during the evening broke into a gun shop and made off with weapons in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille, police said.



Buildings and businesses were also vandalized in the eastern city of Lyon, police said.



Despite the escalating crisis, Macron held off on declaring a state of emergency, an option used in 2005. But government ratcheted up its law enforcement response, with the mass deployment of police officers, including some who were called back from vacation.

The rioting puts new pressure on Macron, who blamed social media for fueling violence.



Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has ordered a nationwide nighttime shutdown of all public buses and trams, which have been among rioters’ targets. He also said he warned social networks not to allow themselves to be used as channels for calls to violence.



“They were very cooperative,” Darmanin said, adding that French authorities were providing the platforms with information in hopes of cooperation identifying people inciting violence.



The violence comes just over a year before Paris and other French cities are due to host Olympic athletes and millions of visitors for the summer Olympic Games, whose organizers were closely monitoring the situation as preparations for the competition continue.



Thirteen people who didn’t comply with traffic stops were fatally shot by French police last year. This year, another three people, including Nahel, died under similar circumstances. The deaths have prompted demands for more accountability in France, which also saw racial justice protests after George Floyd’s killing by police in Minnesota.

“They came specifically to do damage, loot and leave,” said Youcef Bettahar, a shopkeeper at the Merlan shopping mall in Marseille. “We’re really disgusted by what’s happening.”


A number of towns have declared overnight curfews.



The protests present a fresh crisis for President Emmanuel Macron who had been hoping to press on with his second mandate after seeing off months of protests that erupted in January over raising the retirement age.



He postponed a state visit to Germany scheduled to begin Sunday, in a sign of the gravity of the situation in France.



Macron will head a crisis meeting Sunday with members of his government, according to the Elysee.

Nahel’s funeral ceremony was held Saturday in Nanterre, where he lived, with hundreds gathering peacefully along with his mother and grandmother.

The event was marked by “reflection” and went off “without incidents”, a witness told AFP.



In a bid to limit the ongoing violence, buses and trams in France have stopped running after 9:00 pm and the sale of large fireworks and inflammable liquids has been banned.



Marseille has stopped all urban transport from 6:00pm.

Macron has urged parents to take responsibility for underage rioters, one-third of whom were “young or very young”.



Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti said Saturday that 30 percent of those arrested were minors, while Darmanin said the average age of those arrested was just 17.


The unrest has raised concerns abroad, with France hosting the Rugby World Cup in the autumn and the Paris Olympic Games in the summer of 2024.



Britain and other European countries updated their travel advice to warn tourists to stay away from areas affected by the rioting.



Iran on Sunday called on France to “end the violent treatment of its people”, and urged its own citizens to avoid non-essential travel to France.



China’s consulate in Marseille similarly warned its citizens to “be vigilant and exercise caution” after state-run media reported the pelting with stones of a bus carrying Chinese tourists in the southern city.



Culture and entertainment have been disrupted, with singer Mylene Farmer calling off stadium concerts and French fashion house Celine cancelling its Paris menswear show.

A 38-year-old policeman has been charged with voluntary homicide over Nahel’s death and has been remanded in custody.



The UN rights office said Friday that the killing of the teen of North African descent was “a moment for the country to seriously address the deep issues of racism and racial discrimination in law enforcement”.



The French foreign ministry said any suggestion of systemic discrimination in the police force was “totally unfounded”.

As chaos and disorder surge through the streets of France, Nationalist politician Marine Le Pen, who ran for President in 2022 against globalist Macron, has issued a stirring national address, imploring her compatriots to reject the rising tide of anarchy and violence.



“For several days, a state of endemic disorder, violence, and destruction has been established in the country, the images and echoes of which are chillingly brutal,” Le Pen began her address. She painted a sobering picture of a nation in turmoil, referencing attacks on people and property, assaults on police officers and firefighters, the ransacking of town halls, school fires, and the looting of shops.



Le Pen held no punches in her criticisms of what she termed “politicized politicians or unions,” whom she accused of morally exonerating the criminal acts spiraling the country into chaos. In a pointed message, she stated that these actors “will carry an indelible responsibility before the nation and history,” even as they fall victim to the violence they have fostered.



Turning her attention to the citizens of France, Le Pen issued a stark warning against “anti-republican and extremist forces” that she believes are steering the nation towards chaos and disorder. She lamented the pervasive violence that has now infected municipalities of all sizes and has even reached the heart of Paris.



“I call on all citizens to distrust these anti-republican and extremist forces which, through their indirect calls for secession and their connivance with violence, are leading the country down terrible paths of disorder. This recurrent violence for years is now at unprecedented levels and now affects all types of municipalities, from the smallest to the center of large cities, including the heart of the capital,” Le Pen said in her nation address.


The state of affairs, according to Le Pen, serves as a wake-up call to the nation’s leaders, who she accuses of being intoxicated by power and ideological constructions, particularly in the fields of immigration and judicial laxity.



“Our country is entering a period of uncertainty and concern. As head of the first opposition force, I intend to stick to our line of conduct of not doing anything that could prevent or hinder the action of the legitimate authorities responsible for public order. I give my full support to all the security forces deployed to put an end to these riots,” she added.



“I call for the cessation of violence,” implored Le Pen, calling for spontaneous intervention by courageous and civic-minded parents or the legitimate force of law and justice if necessary. She argued that the immediate solution to the destructive rage engulfing the country is a return to republican order through sectoral curfews, and if the situation worsens, the declaration of a state of emergency.



In a final plea, Le Pen requested President Macron to convene a meeting with all parties represented in the National Assembly to discuss the grave situation and the initiatives needed to safeguard freedom and public security.

Flaming Car ‘Assassination’ Attempt on French Mayor Sees Wife and Child Injured as They Fled From Violent Mob

A murder investigation has been launched after French rioters rammed a burning car into the home of the mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses, in an attack that is being described as an “assassination” attempt which saw his wife and one of his two children injured as they fled for their lives.



Local prosecutors have opened a murder investigation on Sunday after the home of Vincent Jeanbrun, mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses in the Paris suburb of Val-de-Marne was attacked by rioters with a flaming car.



While the mayor was not at home at the time of the attack, his wife was “seriously” injured and hospitalised, suffering a broken leg while trying to flee the violent mob. One of the couple’s children was also injured during the attack.

Speaking to the Le Figaro newspaper, the mayor’s office said that the rioters had “the clear intention of setting fire to the mayor’s home”.



For his part, Mayor Jeanbrun said on Sunday: “Last night, a milestone was reached in horror and ignominy. My home was attacked and my family was the victim of an assassination attempt. My determination to protect and serve the Republic is greater than ever. I will not back down.”

In addition to ramming a flaming car into their home, the rioters also set the family’s car on fire before being chased off by police officers, who discovered a Coca-Cola bottle full of a fire accelerant at the scene.



Jeanbrun was barricaded in the local town hall and guarded by several police officers at the time of the attack, with the local area descending into chaos amid nationwide riots following the police shooting of an Algerian-heritage 17-year-old referred to as Nahel M after he fled in his car from a police stop.


The prosecutor’s office in Créteil announced that an investigation was opened on Sunday into attempted murder.



The attack has shocked the political class across France, with Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne telling reporters as she visited the site that those responsible for the attack will be punished with the “utmost severity”.



Former presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said: “A new milestone was reached last night with the fire at the home of the mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses. All my thoughts are with Vincent Jeanbrun, his children and his wife, who is hospitalised today.

The huge extent of damage and vandalism caused in nearly a week of nightly riots in France has been dramatically underlined with a summary of recorded burnings so far, with the toll running to thousands of vehicles and buildings.



Ministry of the Interior figures taking account of damage to people and property during the now six nights of riots triggered by the shooting death by a police officer of an Algerian heritage teenager in a Paris suburb at a traffic stop reveals there have been 5,662 vehicle fires so far, reports Le Parisien.



The widespread destruction of vehicles, which as images recorded in the areas of unrest in France attest, include not just private cars but also trucks and buses. Trams have also been targeted by vandals. In one widely-reported case, a large truck was stolen by looters to ram down the doors of a mall to gain access to the merchandise inside. There were 1,919 vehicle fires on Thursday night alone.

Attacks on public transport is not without its own consequences, particularly for less affluent communities who disproportionately rely on it to get around, a point made by the grandmother of the slain teen at the heart of this unrest. Speaking after images of whole bus depots worth of public transit burnt to the ground circulated, Nahel’s grandmother, Nadia appealed to the public: “Stop and do not riot… I tell the people who are rioting this: Do not smash windows, attack schools or buses. Stop! It’s the mums who are taking the bus, it’s the mums who walk outside.”



Partly through sheer destruction of public transport vehicles but also to protect riders and staff, and to limit mobility of young people during the defacto curfew across France to clamp down on rioting, public transport has been shut down every night. Per Le Figaro, that is to continue this week, with travellers invited to consider their plans in advance to not get stranded.



Damage has not by any means been limited to burnt-out cars and buses, however. As the government figures attest, at least 1,000 buildings have been damaged in the riots. This includes attacks on 254 police stations, as well as dozens of town halls, schools, post offices, and private commercial properties targeted for burning or looting.

While the government was slow to react to the violence at first last week, it eventually appeared to start to get a handle on the situation with an eventual ramping up of the police deployment from 7,000 officers to 45,000 a night. Arrests and recorded damage have fallen nightly over the weekend, say reports, with 157 arrests from Sunday into Monday morning compared to 1,311 from Friday night into Saturday.



There have been 2,354 arrests in total so far. The average age of those being arrested is 17 years old, and 60 per cent have no prior criminal record, Le Parisien reports. 722 police officers have been injured in the riots, although the number of seriously injured is comparatively low.



One fireman is reported to have died over the weekend, and although it is reported he was attempting to put out a car fire in an underground parking lot at the time of his death, authorities haven’t officially linked the fatality to the riots. The firefighter, reported to be just 24 years old, died of a heart attack.

Macron Demands Big Tech Censors Reports on French Riots, Blames Social Media for Violence

French President Emmanuel Macron is blaming social media and video games for the days of violent rioting seen in cities across France, and not his own globalist policies.



Macron, a World Economic Forum (WEF) “Young Global Leader” and a former Rothschild banker, is demanding that Big Tech companies censor reports on the riots.



Almost one week of rioting was triggered by the fatal police shooting of a Muslim teenager Nahel Merzouk on June 27.



Merzouk, a 17-year-old Algerian migrant, was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop following a car chase in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, France.



Since the incident, Muslims and far-left activists have been rioting in the streets and looting businesses.



Macron, who was spotted dancing at an Elton John concert over the weekend while the streets of Paris burned, now wants reports on the riots to be censored.



Macron’s comments are hardly original, yet they warrant scrutiny from a free speech perspective.



The French leader is pleading with social media giants to erase the “most sensitive” content pertaining to the rioting.



“Platforms and networks are playing a major role in the events of recent days,” macron claimed, without evidence.



His words, veiled under a guise of concern, echo a familiar tune that has been played on the world stage before.



“We’ve seen them; Snapchat, TikTok, and several others, serve as places where violent gatherings have been organized, but there’s also a form of mimicry of the violence which for some young people leads them to lose touch with reality,” Macron added.



“You get the impression that, for some of them, they are experiencing on the street the video games that have intoxicated them.”



Macron’s comments have caused outrage among free speech advocates who accuse the French president of urging platforms to suppress content as part of an ulterior motive.

On the surface, it appears to be an act of preventing violence.



However, the move also conveniently serves as an avenue for controlling narratives and stifling voices.



The tactics are similar to those used during the Canadian trucker protests.



Macron also tried to shift the blame to parents by emphasizing that a third of those arrested were “young or very young.”



“It’s not the state’s job to act in their place,” he added.



However, the riots didn’t happen because parents let their video games.



The situation is precarious, with more than 200 police officers injured, and 875 people arrested.



The nation watches on as buildings are torched and stores are looted.



Meanwhile, their leader dances like Nero as the city streets burn.

45000 police and security were deployed in France Sunday night as rioting seemed to abate in the sixth night. Local patriot militias also roamed the streets in Lyon and elsewhere. A 24-year-old fire fighter died. A right-wing TV host raised over €1 M for the officer involved in the shooting of 17-year-old Nahel M.

157 arrests were made Sunday night, down from 719 arrests Saturday night, 994 Friday night and 1311 Thursday night. 24-year-old firefighter Dorian Damelincourt died in Saint-Denis trying to fight a fire of several vehicles in an underground car park. A total of 352 fires were recorded: 297 vehicles were burned and 34 buildings set on fire. Three police officers were reported injured.

After five nights of riots, the Ministry of the Interior recorded about 5,000 vehicles burned, nearly 1,000 buildings damaged, 250 attacks on police stations, and more than 700 police officers injured. About 3,200 have been arrested since Tuesday during the riots.



The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGNP) denied reports that the police officer involved in the fatal shooting of Nahel M. June 27 had threatened to “shoot him in the head” as claimed by Nahel’s accomplice Fouad and mainstream media intent on fueling the violence. Instead, the officers had instructed Nahel to turn off the engine and put his hands behind his head, Valeurs Actuelles reports.



The third occupant of the car has surrendered to the police after fleeing to Marseille and is now being questioned as a witness.

Conservative CNews pundit Jean Messiha raised €1 Million on GoFundMe in 4 days from 42.220 people for Florian M., the officer involved in the death of Nahel M. The Minister of Justice warned against “instrumentalization” of the donation – while shamefully charging his own officer who almost got run over by the young man with “voluntary killing”.



In St. Etienne, a 79-year-old Priest, Father Francis Palle, was attacked by two young men and robbed of his wallet and cell phone Thursday, and had to be hospitalized with bruises. The Diocese denied a connection to the riots or his priesthood, since he was not wearing his frock at the time of the attack.



Across France, citizens gathered outside town halls Monday at 1 pm to protest the riots and the attack on the family of the mayor of Paris suburb L’Haÿ-les-Roses.



In Lyon, patriots patrolled the streets chanting, “Blue, white, red: France belongs to the French!”

Police tried to dispel the militia march with tear gas.

French Media Reports Vigilante Gang Zip-Tying Rioters And Handing Them to Police

The existence of a masked gang of young men tying up rioters in one town is discussed in French language publications, but the mayor insists no such thing exists and tells locals to call the police if they witness unrest.



Witness accounts of a so-called “brigade anticasseur” (anti-thug brigade) in the port town of Lorlent, Brittany are reported by local newspaper Le Télégramme. In addition to what is reported by members of the public to the paper, a journalist for the publication claims to have seen a group of between 20 and 30 “young, hooded men” wearing balaclavas and gloves performing unofficial arrests.



Using zip-ties to restrain alleged rioters, the men are said to have then handed their captures onto the regular police on Friday night as well as having been seen putting out fires. Described as strongly physically built, fast-moving, and proceeding in a tightly-packed group, a report in Ouest France says one member of the group told a journalist that he couldn’t reveal their identities but that “we are on the good side” and that the group was a spontaneous meeting of friends to protect the city-centre.

The paper claims to have witnessed the group arresting a rioter thought to have vandalised a local business, restraining the individual with “visibly well-honed technique”, as well as punching a rioter in the face. While police officers on the scene talking to the paper say they don’t know who the group are, they are welcoming of the help.



One officer is reported to have said to Le Télégramme: “We let it happen at the start of the evening, because it relieved us”.



Local station J’aime Radio claims to have spoken to members of the group on patrol again two nights later, interviewing them anonymously. One who spoke to the station said at first a group of friends decided they wished to stand side-by-side with police but not get involved, but eventually having seen how overwhelmed the small number of officers were becoming compared to the weight of rioters, they felt obliged to get involved.



When asked by the interviewer if the group had any “far-right” connections, a woman replied that: “no, we are just people who want to save France, because France is going to ruin”. She further added that it was their belief the killing of an Algerian-heritage teen by a police officer last week is just being used as an excuse for rioting and looting by youths.



A man added “we are patriots who love France” and that if rioters only had trouble with the police, they could understand that, but the attacks on private businesses for looting underlined the true cause of the violence. He said it was unacceptable to see a small business owner, who may have invested his whole life of savings, and all his energy, see his hard work “go up in smoke” because of looters.

Several outlets including Ouest France, Telegram and Le Figaro all point out that the town of Lorlent is home to a military base but do not go so far as to definitely assert the brigade’s members are off-duty Marines. A spokesman for the Maritime Commandos force stationed at the base is reported to have denied any knowledge of their people being involved.



Despite journalists from several newspapers reporting directly on the activities of the brigade anticasseurs, the mayor of Lorlent moved quickly to dismiss speculation, insisting the vigilantes didn’t, in fact, exist at all. Centre-right UDI party mayor Fabrice Loher said: “In response to a rumour: no, there is no “militia” working alongside the police! Our citizens are called to call… to report any public order issues.”



Generally, rioters using the death of a teenager in a Paris suburb last Tuesday as a pretext for violence and looting have been able to carry on without interruption from the rest of French society, and even the French government was relatively slow in deploying the police in force. While there were 7,000 officers on patrol the first evening of rioting, it took days to reverse the trend of soaring violence with an eventual deployment of 45,000 officers a night, which is still ongoing.



While there were more clashes, fires, and arrests on Monday night, numbers are considerably down on the peak of violence on Thursday and Friday. According to French Interior Ministry figures, there have been 5,821 car fires and well over 1,000 buildings damaged including 254 police stations and 243 schools, including 60 which took significant damage.



In the now seven nights of violence there have been 2,426 arrests.

72 people were arrested Monday night and 159 vehicles set afire as riots continued. 202 fires were set on roads last night, and 24 buildings burned. Four police stations were attacked.



French President Emmanuel Macron was scheduled to meet with the mayors of 220 towns affected by the riots on Tuesday.



A police station in the Châtelet district of Rouen was set on fire as terrified neighbors filmed the rioters.

Geoffroy Roux de Bezieux, the head of the French business group MEDEF, said that hundreds of members have reported being attacked during the rioting, with 300 bank branches, 200 stores and 250 tobacco shops among those affected.



Speaking to Le Parisien, he said the cost of the damage already exceeds a billion euros, but the true damage will ultimately be much harder to measure as footage of the violence impacts France’s tourism industry.



Tourism makes up around 10 percent of France’s GDP, and tourist spending hit a record of 58 billion euros last year. This year, however, it could take a sharp downturn if the continued rioting keeps visitors away.



Paris Tourist Office Head Jean-Francois Rial reports that a lot of tourists have already changed their plans. He stated: "We've already had thousands of cancellations. At the start of July, I think we're already looking at 20 to 25 percent cancellations in Paris among international customers, and I wouldn't be surprised if the figures were the same for the whole of France."



Tourists have already been victims of the violence, with the Chinese Consulate General complaining to the government of France that a tour bus of its citizens came under attack in Marseilles. Some of those on the bus were injured as windows were smashed, and the footage of the incident went viral.



France is so concerned about the loss of tourists that its Economy Minister, Bruno Le Maire, has been making appearances on foreign media insisting that the rioting is not going to impact tourists. While countries like the U.S., Canada and the U.K. have been encouraging citizens to exercise great caution while traveling there, Le Maire is downplaying the threat.



Speaking to the Daily Telegraph yesterday, he said: "All the major democracies today are faced with this kind of problem" and added that "our British friends should be happy to visit France and have no fear."



He is also trying to convince foreign investors that the riots will not have an effect on the economy, saying the violence “has no impact on the daily life of the 65 million French citizens and this will not have a deep impact on the French growth and the French economy."

French President Emmanuel Macron has faced comparisons to communist dictators after he called for social media networks to be “cut off” during the violent riots that have swept across the nation.



In a meeting with 300 mayors at the Élysée Palace in Paris earlier this week, embattled President Emmanuel Macron suggested that the government could implement a blackout to “cut off social networks” when “things get carried away” during riots, according to Le Figaro.



The country, which is somewhat accustomed to people rioting in the streets has faced the most destructive mayhem in recent memory following the police shooting of an Algerian teen after he sped away from a traffic stop in the Nanterre suburb of Paris last Tuesday. During the ensuing riots, over 5,000 vehicles have been destroyed and some 1,000 buildings were set on fire. So far, over 3,000 people, mostly teenagers, have been arrested.



Nevertheless, Macron’s call for censorship of social media to combat the violent riots — a measure typically only deployed in war zones or in despotic regimes — has prompted a fierce backlash, with many comparing his inclinations to those of communist dictators.



President of the centre-right Les Républicains group in the National Assembly, Olivier Marleix wrote on Twitter: “Cut social media? Like China, Iran, North Korea? Even if it is a provocation to divert attention, it is in very bad taste.”



Green Party MP Cyrielle Châtelain echoed the sentiment, questioning: “ We are going to manage social networks like in Russia or China?”

Even the head of the leftist La France Insoumise group in the National Assembly, Mathilde Panot mocked Macron, responding to the proposal by merely writing: “OK Kim Jung-Un”, in reference to the North Korean dictator.



Ironically, one of the few national leaders to refrain from criticising the president for his call for censorship was Fabien Roussel, the national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), who called for similar censorship measures to be imposed in response to the riots.



Attempting to quell the outrage, the government later tried to clarify the remarks from Macron, with Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion Christophe Béchu noting that it was “not the announcement of a censorship law, in any way”.



However, it does appear that the government is still intent on pursuing options in terms of social media censorship, with Government spokesman Olivier Véran calling for a “bi-partisan” group of parliamentarians to discuss the matter. He said that the government could look to impose restrictions on geolocation services in social media apps, which he claimed allows rioters to organise and find each other during the chaos.

Majority of French Blame Riots on Mass Migration as Establishment Attempts to Downplay Impact

The riots that recently swept across France were a result of “failures of migration policy” according to six in ten in the country, despite attempts by the political establishment to gloss over the role of mass migration in the social breakdown in France.



A survey conducted this week by Odoxa-Backbone Consulting for the Le Figaro newspaper found that the overwhelming majority of the French public (84 per cent) denounced the violence that broke out following the police killing of an Algerian-heritage teenager last month. Although the violence and rioting have subsided to some degree, nearly nine in ten (89 per cent) fear for the future of their country following the breakdown in social order.



While establishment figures, such as former President François Hollande and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin have attempted to cast blame elsewhere, a firm majority of the French, 59 per cent, openly stated that they believe the riots were “the consequence of the failures of our migration policy”. An even larger majority, 71 per cent, said that there should be a reduction in immigration to the country.



Hollande, the former Socialist Party president whose term in office was marred by Islamic terrorism such as the Charlie Hebdo shooting, was one of the first major figures to try to counteract the idea of failed migration and assimilation, saying: “It is not a problem of immigration.”


In an interview with the Times of London, the ex-French president went on to try to cast blame for the riots on the coronavirus lockdowns and the ensuing financial hardships, saying that when you “shut away part of this youth, which withdrew in on itself, in on its neighbourhoods, in on its networks, in on its communities and that led to a loss of openness, of discipline and of the rules of life in society”.



“This made part of the population poorer and so when there was the unleashing of violence, there was also a desire to go and get goods that you cannot buy in ordinary times. It was not a politically structured social movement, it was an opportunity… to break into shops and take everything inside,” the socialist politician added.

A top member of President Macron’s cabinet, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin also tried to downplay the connections between the violence and mass migration, climbing that “there were a lot of Kévins and Mattéos” among those arrested in the unrest. Darmanin went on to claim that “90 per cent” of arrests were of French citizens and that the real issue was “young offenders, not foreigners.”



However, many criticised this claim as misleading. A core tenet of the French Republic is to be officially “colour blind”, meaning that the government does not collect detailed racial statistics for those living in France. Unlike countries such as Germany, which will record if a citizen has a “migration background” — having at least one foreign parent — France does not have a firm idea of exactly how many would fall into such a category in the country.


Therefore, the Interior Minister’s claims of nine in ten rioters being “French” has drawn considerable pushback. Stéphane Rozès of the Paris Institute of Political Studies criticised Darmanin for spreading “ambiguities”.



“These riots will in any case settle down but as the problems remain, these riots are a symptom of the disintegration of the Republic for which the rulers are the first responsible. How Algeria intervened in these riots shows the instrumentalization of anti-French sentiment both on their own soil and on ours. The Islamo leftists are the main accomplices,” he said.



Political columnist Vincent Tremolet de Villers also took aim at the assertions, stating: “No one seriously believes that there is no link between the immigration policy pursued for forty years and these riots.”

Marine Le Pen also blasted Darmanin, saying: “It is a false reality. He knows very well that an ultra-majority of people involved feel foreign or are of foreign origin.”



The longtime critic of mass migration and former presidential candidate said that France has suffered under a “totally anarchic immigration for 40 years,” which she believes has already resulted in a “secession” movement within the country among those immigrant populations with a “hatred of France”.



The breakdown in cultural cohesion has been a boon to Le Pen and her National Rally (RN) party, with a poll from the Democracy Institute of 1,000 French voters conducted during the height of the riots last week finding that 51 per cent would vote for the populist leader over President Macron, who mustered 47 per cent support.

Over 600 People Imprisoned Over France Riots So Far, 95 Per Cent Conviction Rate

The massive France-wide riots that saw thousands of cars and buildings attacked and even burnt out has led to over 1,200 convictions and 600 people sent to prison, the French government has revealed.



Swift justice in France, with 600 people convicted and in prison just two weeks after the widespread riots triggered by the shooting of an Algerian heritage teenager by a police officer at a traffic stop gone wrong, but which soon devolved into looting and violence.

The figures come from the French minister of justice, Éric Dupond-Moretti, who revealed that 1,300 had been prosecuted, 1,278 successfully, a remarkable 95 per cent success rate. Of those, 600 people have been imprisoned, reports Le Figaro.



The minister also revealed there would be some legal repercussions against the parents of lawbreaking children, although Dupond-Moretti said this would be on a “case by case” basis and the government would not be persecuting “the mother who works at night and who raises her child alone”.



Also revealed in Dupond-Moretti’s comments are the extent to which prosecutions are being made by using evidence from youth-orientated social media app Snapchat, which sells itself on being a platform for ephemeral — which is to say, self-erasing — messages. Yet the minister warns young criminals to not rely on messages traded on the platform to not be visible to law enforcement.



He said he wanted to: “remind young people that Snapchat is not a hideout, and that [we can] ‘break the accounts’… when two kids call each other to meet up and to hit a target, you can find them”.


France has been forthright in its view that social media played a major role in the violence last month, with President Macron outright calling for social apps to be “cut off” during the riots with a partial internet blackout. Critics compared the French leader to the North Korean regime for his authoritarian impulse to take out access to social media, but the European elites were undeterred, with French European Commissioner Thierry Breton threatening tech giants with bans if they didn’t take down riot content.



The Macron government appears to be leaning into using citizen’s mobile phones against them. Beyond the use of Snapchat conversation histories to secure riot prosecutions, the French government is now in the late stages of passing new rules that will allow them to remotely activate the GPS, camera, and microphone of devices like phones, laptops, and even cars to monitor suspected criminals.



The plan has been attacked from the left and right, but not apparently with enough support to prevent it from passing through France’s parliament.



While reaction from the French public — with some notable exceptions — was muted during the riots, research since has shown the majority have taken an extremely dim view of the violence, which one estimate says has cost over a billion dollars to businesses alone. Polling found a strong majority at 59 per cent believe “the riots were “the consequence of the failures of our migration policy”, and 73 per cent think French citizenship should be stripped from convicted rioters.
