Liberals Propose Email Tax… What’s next?
AUTHOR Bookworm
A Berkeley Progressive wants to put a high tech spin on collecting taxes. Gordon Wozniak, a Berkeley City Councilman (of course), thinks that the government could collect billions of dollars per year if it would just start taxing people for sending and receiving internet data, along with a dedicated tax just for sending emails. This would be in addition to the online sales taxes the Senate just passed.
During the March 5 Berkeley Town Council meeting, Wozniak said that “There should be something like a bit tax. I mean, a bit tax could be a cent per gigabit and they would make, probably, billions of dollars a year.” Add to that just a “very tiny tax on email” to help keep the Post Office alive, and Wozniak imagines a world with mailmen still delivering junk fliers, even as we pay more taxes and receive (he hopes) less email spam.
The problems with these tax is obvious: They would be difficult, if not impossible, to put into effect. Moreover, they would have a disproportionate impact upon businesses that rely heavily on the internet and email, and that have stable data systems (rather than anonymous email addresses) that the IRS could track and tax. That doesn’t seem to bother Wozniak, who sees the imminent expiration of the 1998 Internet Tax Freedom Act as an opening for his idea.
Fortunately, Republican Senators Kelly Ayote and Dean Heller have already introduced legislation to extend it indefinitely. And of course, it would help if Congress passed balanced Rand Paul-style budgets, rather than bankrupt Democrat budgets.
