Devastating earthquake strikes Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan
The strongest earthquake, which has happened in the region of Fergana on July 20th, has hit the two states of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The greatest earthquake aftermath is in Uzbekistan. The ministry of Emergency situations of this country has reported that 86 people were injured and a large number of houses were destroyed. The region needs emergency assistance. The epicenter of the earthquake was 235 kilometres to the South-East of Tashkent, at the territory of Kyrgyzstan. The 7 point earthquake destroyed houses made of brick. Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, as well as Andijan and Fergana regions witnessed 5-point earthquakes. The Namangan region experienced a 4-point earthquake. The president of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov commissioned the government of the country to undertake prompt measures concerning the aftermath of this situation and rendering assistance to victims.
In Kyrgyzstan the earthquake also resulted in large scale destruction. 685 houses of which 203 rendered unsuitable for living and 56 social buildings have been destroyed in the Batken and Osh regions. The Kyrgyzstan Ministry of Emergency Situations hasn’t provided information about victims yet but 15 residents of the Batkensk region will receive medical assistance. Currently, the regional officials are creating tent camps for victims of the earthquake. The Kambodzhin region, which suffered most, will accommodate 115 camps for victims. Currently, several villages in Kyrgyzstan are not supplied with electricity and the Kamadzhai-Khaidarkan road has been closed because of the rockslide. There is also information that a resident of Tajikistan, from the city of Khudzhant, was killed during the earthquake in the Fergana territory.
