Scientific American’s editor has now parted ways with the “science” outlet after triggering a backlash by smearing President Donald Trump’s voters as “fascists.”
Laura Helmuth announced she has stepped down as editor-in-chief following complaints over her profanity-laced tirade against Trump supporters.
As Slay News reported, Helmuth imploded in a series of social media posts on Election Night as it became clear President Trump had secured a historic landslide victory over failed Democrat candidate Kamala Harris.
She blasted Trump voters as the “meanest, dumbest, most bigoted” group of “f—ing fascists” in America.
Helmuth documented her reaction to the presidential election on her Bluesky social media account throughout Tuesday night.
She began optimistically, celebrating Harris’s campaign efforts and confidently suggesting the Democrats would be victorious.
However, as the president-elect’s decisive victory became clear, Helmuth started to attack Trump’s tens of millions of voters.
“Every four years I remember why I left Indiana (where I grew up) and remember why I respect the people who stayed and are trying to make it less racist and sexist,” she wrote.
“The moral arc of the universe isn’t going to bend itself.”
“Solidarity to everybody whose meanest, dumbest, most bigoted high-school classmates are celebrating early results because f— them to the moon and back,” another post read.
Helmuth also wrote, “I apologize to younger voters that my Gen X is so full of f—ing fascists.”
The next day, she shared a Scientific American article titled “Election Grief Is Real. Here’s How to Cope.”
The article from the “science” outlet, which publicly endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 election, features comments from University of Minnesota emeritus professor and psychotherapist Pauline Boss.
Throughout the article, Boss complained about the “outcome of this election” and attacked Trump voters.
The remarks from Helmuth and the subsequent article from Scientific American provoked a backlash on social media.
Helmuth was criticized for her comments and X owner Elon Musk agreed with a user who said she seemed “like a political activist who has taken over a scientific institution.”
She eventually apologized and deleted the comments.
Now Helmuth has announced that she has left Scientific American amid the backlash.
“I’ve decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor-in-chief,” Helmuth posted on the leftist platform Bluesky.
“I’m going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching).”
Under her post announcing her resignation, Helmuth posted links to several articles published under her leadership.
Her articles for the “science” outlet included one that claimed, “gender-affirming care for trans kids is good health care.”
Scientific American President Kimberly Lau confirmed Helmuth’s resignation in a statement to The Washington Post.
“We thank Laura for her four years leading Scientific American during which time the magazine won major science communications awards and saw the establishment of a reimagined digital newsroom,” Lau said.
“We wish her well for the future.”
During the election, Trump performed best with Generation X, exit polls showed.
Gen X considered those between the ages of 45 and 64.
One exit poll from NBC showed that Trump defeated Harris 54%-44% in that age range.
Polling from ABC showed that Trump defeated Harris 50%-48% among those ages 40-49 and 56%-43% among those ages 50-64.
