ACLU Suing Obama For Spying On Americans

You know it’s a big scandal when people on both the left and the right side of the political aisle are appalled by what happened. The ACLU, by positioning itself as a “civil liberties” organization, rather than a Constitutional organization, has fought for more than its fair share of Leftist causes. On Tuesday, however, it took a good hard look at the Fourth Amendment (“no unreasonable searches”) and, aligning itself with the Constitution, sued the Obama administration for its “dragnet” collection of domestic call logs. The suit contended that the NSA’s overly broad searches were illegal, and asked that a judge halt the program immediately and order the NSA to purge its records.
According to the ACLU’s complaint, the NSA program “gives the government a comprehensive record of our associations and public movements, revealing a wealth of detail about our familial, political, professional, religious and intimate associations.” The ACLU claims standing in the matter because the program “is likely to have a chilling effect on whistle-blowers and others who would otherwise contact” organization such as the ACLU for assistance. In addition, the ACLU is a Verizon customer – and Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing revealed that the NSA specifically targeted Verizon.
The Justice Department, which has been dealing with its own spying scandals since it was caught tapping the phones of the Associated Press and using criminal charges to collect data from a Fox News reporter, has refused to speak about the lawsuit.
NSA defenders contend that the program has worked to stop some planned terrorism attacks. Those who fear the program’s overreach point out that it didn’t stop the Boston bombing. In other words, since it’s a fallible program, how does one justify the tentacles it spreads into every aspect of every American’s life?
The American people aren’t stupid. They look to their government to take reasonable steps to defend them from terrorist attacks that the people have no ability to defend against by themselves. The key word is “reasonable.” If the United States government deprives every American of freedom in order to “defend” against some percentage of attacks, the war on terrorism is already over, and the American people have lost, since they will have been deprived of their inalienable right to Liberty.
