Man is Reunited With Cats Missing After Car Crash
Catman September 6, 2013 0
Driving home from a funeral in Pennsylvania for his mother, David Hess and his three cats were on their way home to Canada. This was on August 15th. Having been distraught and sleep deprived, Hess fell asleep at the wheel of his van and he hit a utility pole, rolled over, and skidded until the car finally came to a stop. The driver’s side window was smashed leaving an opening which the cats would use to escape.
Hess himself was only slightly injured and the cats were fine but they did feel the effects of the crash and were scared. Hess got out of the van without assistance but lost track of the cats. Joseph Corona, a Deputy with the Sheriff’s Department, was able to get a hold of Delilah, but Albert and Sophie were not found.
“I sat in the tow truck with one cat in my lap and I left two others behind. When I got home I was really so sad and disheartened,” Hess said Tuesday when he came back to Batavia to pick up Albert and Sophie from the Genesee County Animal Shelter. “I’ll be pretty excited going back with them.”
Hess mentioned to Joanne Beck of The Daily News losing the cats was tough for him and that he would not give up.. Hess went online and found the Volunteers for Animals, a non-profit group that works with the Genesee County Animal Shelter. Another local paper, The Batavian, ran a short item on Hess’ search for the missing cats, with an appeal to readers asking for their help.
Through Volunteers for Animals, several local residents distributed posters, searched for the cats, left food and set out traps. Albert was picked up this past Sunday, and Sophie was trapped on Monday. Hess was reunited with the cats on Tuesday. We couldn’t be happier!
