DANGEROUS COMPUTER VIRUS -- PLEASE READ

In my job as a computer technician I have run across a virus/malware infection which cannot be defeated or cured. It is called the CrypoLocker Ransomware virus and unlike a lot of virus warnings you read about on the Internet this one is real! It comes in the form of an email ZIP file attachment. Once the ZIP file is decompressed and opened, it encrypts all of the personal files on your computer (documents, pictures, music, etc.). A screen will appear instructing you that you have 72 hours to pay the $300.00 ransom to receive an encryption key from the ransomer to decrypt your files. If you wait longer than the allotted time, the Ransomware server will delete the encryption key and your files will remain encrypted forever. This scam is believed to have originated in Russia (Russian Mob) and they are using military grade encryption software that cannot be defeated. The only way to unlock your files is to pay the $300.00 ransom. If you try to tamper with the computer to remove the virus (which can be done) your files will still remain encrypted, and your computer will then be unable to communicate with the Ransomware server to retrieve your decryption key. These bastards have thought of everything. Newer versions of the Ransomware will even delete shadow copies of your files that Windows System Restore uses to restore your computer to an earlier time. It is very important to back up your data, now more than ever. HOWEVER, do not back up your data to your primary hard drive, or another hard drive in the same computer, or an Internet or Cloud drive. All of those back up methods are vulnerable to the virus. The ONLY safe method of data back up is to back up to an external USB hard drive which should be disconnected from your computer after back up is completed. Any external drive connected to an infected computer will become infected and its files will be encrypted. The ONLY way to defeat this malware is to not get infected in the first place. DO NOT click on any Zipped email attachments even if you know the sender! Please share this with your friends.
