Could the drums of war be far off?
North Korea's young leader, Kim Jong Un, urged the secretive country to bolster its military strength this week, as a war could begin "without prior notice," the nation's state media agency said Wednesday.
The 30-year-old leader on Christmas Eve visited a command center for the Korean People's Army called the Command of Large Combined Unit 526, giving instructions for soldiers to be ready for combat at any time, the Korean Central News Agency reported.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Leader publicly ordered the execution of his "traitor" uncle, Jang Song-Thaek, by firing squad. The country condemned Song-Thaek as "despicable human scum" and "worse than a dog."
According to a recent report by the New York Times, Song-Thaek was executed over a bitter argument between him and his nephew over North Korea's shellfish exports, which includes clams and crabs.
Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun also reported that Kim Jong Un was "very drunk" when he ordered his 67-year-old uncle and former mentor in front of the firing squad, citing sources close to the matter.
North Korea has long threatened possible nuclear retaliation against those it deems its enemies. Earlier this year, South Korean president Park Geun-Hye said development of deadly weapons was a "serious threat to peace and stability in the region."
