In case you've been living under a rock and haven't heard of it, Yonanas is a machine that makes an ice cream-like frozen treat out of bananas and/or other fruits. It's sold on infomercials, but is also now available on HSN as well as at Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Price is $49; obviously, Target or BBB is the way to go, so you don't have to pay S&H which is ridiculously high on the infomercial. It's not as bad on HSN, and they offer it on two Flex Pays.
Ease of Use: Five stars
Yonanas is very simple to operate. Just put your frozen, overripe bananas and/or other fruit into the chute, flip the switch, push down with the plunger, and out comes your frozen treat. Bananas come out with the consistency of soft-serve ice cream; other fruits (I tried strawberries, pineapple, mango, and papaya) aren't as creamy (but then, bananas have a creamy texture to begin with), but are more like an Italian ice.
Flavor: Four stars
Yonanas frozen treats might take a little bit of getting used to, and here's why: If you've ever bought frozen fruit bars, you'll see that the ingredients include fruit...and sugar. We're so conditioned to the taste of processed foods that are overly sweet and artificially flavored that foods as God intended them to taste seem lacking. Since the ONLY ingredient you use is fresh fruit and no added sugar, Yonanas isn't as sweet as commercially prepared products. It's far healthier though, and after a short time would probably taste perfectly fine and "normal."
A recipe book is included, and some of the flavors you can make include Mint Chocolate Chip, Lemon Raspberry, Cherry Chocolate, PBJ, Orange Whip, Chocolate Coconut, Pumpkin Pie, Blackberry Vanilla Bean, and more. Yonanas has a FB page, and users post recipes they've created there.
Ease of cleaning and storage: Five stars
The unit is easy to clean (although you have to be careful of the sharp "teeth" which are exposed when you take it apart for cleaning), and it takes no more counter space than the average blender.
Other comments:
If you're trying to lose weight or just want to eat healthier, Yonanas is the way to go. It's both a nice change from smoothies, as well as lower in calories and has zero fat, cholesterol, or sodium. I did find, however, that the recommended two bananas per serving was far too much, unless you have smaller sized bananas than I did.
