Who is this 'beast' that was 'once alive, but lives no longer" the occupants on the earth will be amazed at when he makes his re-appearance? Anyone have any theories/thoughts on this?

I would assume that it is beast, the revived Roman Empire, the government of the Antichrist, that comes alive. It attacks the woman (the false religious system, the false prophet) because of jealousy and desire for supremacy.
