1/2 cup softened cream cheese or cream cheese spread
1 tsp finely grated orange peel
1/2 tsp cinnamon
6 plain donuts
1 cup blueberries
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
pinch of salt (didn't mention this in the video)
3/4 cup or about 1/2 pound bacon, cooked, drained, patted dry and crumbled
1 cup maple syrup
icing sugar for garnish
Additional blueberries for garnish
Grease an 8x10 or 9x13 inch pan (depending on the size of your donuts)
Cut donuts in half horizontally
In a small bowl combine the cream cheese, cinnamon and citrus peel.
Spread the cream cheese mixture on bottom halves of cut donuts.
Place the cream cheese covered donut halves in the a greased baking dish.
Sprinkle with blueberries and try to get most of them in the cream cheese, pressing down lightly so they stick.
Sprinkle with brown sugar.
Top with donut halves.
In a medium sized bowl, combine milk, eggs, vanilla and salt.
Pour egg mixture slowly over the donuts in the pan.
Cover and refrigerate several hours over overnight.
I put mine in the fridge at around 4pm. At around 6pm I flipped them over gently. Before bed at 11pm I flipped them back over and allowed them to sit until morning.
Remove cover and bake at 350F for 40 minutes until donuts are browned and set.
While donuts are baking, simmer maple syrup with bacon pieces in a small pot for about 10 minutes.
To serve, spoon a little maple syrup with bacon pieces in it into the bottom of a plate. Place a baked donut in the center on top of the syrup and sprinkle with powdered sugar and additional blueberries if desired.
