The Islamic State published a picture of what it claims was the type of bomb that brought down a Russian airliner over Egypt last month.
“The image appeared in the latest issue of the militant group’s magazine, Dabiq, and shows a can of Schweppes Gold and what appears to be a detonator and a switch for an improvised bomb. It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the photo,” Foreign Policy reported.
In the magazine, ISIS said that it has initially planned to target a nation participating in the U.S.-led coalition, but chose to hit Russia after it entered the war on the side of the Assad regime.
“The divided Crusaders of the East and West thought themselves safe in their jets as they cowardly bombarded the Muslims of the Caliphate,” Dabiq magazine said. “And so revenge was exacted upon those who felt safe in the cockpits.”
“This was to show the Russians and whoever allies with them that they will have no safety in the lands and airspace of the Muslims,” the group wrote. “That their daily killing of dozens in (Syria) through their air strikes will only bring them calamities.”
The Russians confirmed earlier this week that its investigation determined that the Airbus 321 jet was brought down by a bomb made up of about 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of TNT. The bomb was in the cargo compartment, according to the Russian Daily Kommersant.
The Islamic State indicated that it exploited a security weakness at the Sharm al-Sheikh airport in Egypt to smuggle the bomb on board that was responsible for killing the 224 passengers and crew. Reuters reported that two airport employees were arrested on Monday under suspicion of helping the terrorists plant the bomb.
“On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to hunt down those responsible for blowing up the plane and offered a $50 million reward for information leading to those responsible. ‘We will find them anywhere on the planet and punish them,’ Putin said of the plane bombers at a sombre Kremlin meeting,” according to Reuters.
