I had never heard of "pillowcase dresses" until last week, when I was helping with Operation Christmas Child at a local church; a woman made and donated a THOUSAND pillowcase dresses to use as "fillers." (Most shoeboxes are filled to the brim, but a few were pitiful with only a few measly - and sometimes unappealing - items in them, so things are donated by both individuals and corporations to "fill in" the boxes.) Anyway, I was curious as to what they were so did a search when I came home, and found that you can make a cute dress for a little girl out of a pillowcase!
I also found this website called "Little Dresses For Africa," where you'll find instructions on how to make these dresses (they're quick and easy), and there's an address that you can send them to. Missionaries then take them to little girls in need; there are also instructions on how to make shorts for little boys.
I told the wife of my pastor in Hawaii about these as I know the ladies' group always has something going. Turns out they were already aware of this project, and she added the information that children who are nicely dressed are actually less likely to be kidnapped by sex slave traffickers.
Anyway, if you like to sew and/or are with a church that has a women's group that's looking for a worthwhile project, please check these out at the link.
