"Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead [their] dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger." Jeremiah 7:17,18
The Worship of Mary and the Rosary
Excerpts from Chapter 9: "Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy. Hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping..."my pure white plastic rosary beads hung freely from my right hand as I recited the last portion of the Roman Catholic Holy Rosary. I decided to stop by the Adoration Chapel that day, which was in the main Cathedral, across from the diocesan high school I attended, to spend time with the Lord in prayer.
Mary the Queen of Heaven
Mary is viewed as a co-redeemer with Jesus Christ
I spent a couple of hours in the chapel before I went home after school. I was still a freshman back then, nevertheless, a strong spiritual foundation for the love of the Rosary had already been built
in me.
The Holy Rosary had been a part of any strong Catholic’s faith. It was one of the most commonly and widely practiced among the faithful. The Rosary was the extra-liturgical devotion to Mary that had been warmly and highly recommended by the Church itself. It was perhaps the only practice that had come to be regarded as the very badge of Catholic piety. Pope Benedict XVI considered it "the most eloquent sign of love that the young generation nourishes for Jesus and his Mother, Mary."
It was a devotion I faithfully practiced myself. The prayers consisted of repeated sequences of the Lord’s Prayer followed by ten of the Hail Mary and a single recitation of Glory Be to the Father. At
some point I was told that the Holy Rosary represented the recitation of the 150 Psalms. Although I personally held the repetitions as a deep devotion to Mary and Jesus, it never occurred to me that the Word of God had something to say about it.
My Bible reading had opened my eyes to see that there were certain Truths in the Word of God that I had blatantly opposed due to my ignorance of them. In Matthew 6:7, I encountered Jesus’s words when He talked about praying. He explained that there’s a kind of prayer that was essentially meaningless ...
"But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking." Matthew 6:7
It was quite difficult to face that Truth because I had honestly been devoted to the Holy Rosary for years. That was one of the lifelines I considered precious in my so-called Christian walk. When I
thought about its origin--Mary herself appearing to St. Dominic, it seemed to me to have come from very reliable sources.
My mind-set was fixed to a belief that I’d held on to for twenty-five years and it wasn’t until God convicted me with His Truth in Scripture that I gained the courage to realize something in my life
wasn’t in accordance to the Word of God.
"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." Galatians 1:8
"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Matthew 6:6
It was one of the many difficult things I had to submit to as they were revealed through God’s Word, but God’s grace wouldn’t let me go on in my ignorance any longer. His Word had shown many Truths that condemn the practices and beliefs I had devotedly followed for years in my Catholic walk.
God called me to walk away from the Rosary, even to walk away from whom I had loved and believed strongly to be one of the most important persons in my Catholic faith--Mary.
Mary played a very distinctive role in my Catholic belief. She was my spiritual mother, my intercessor--the closest link to heaven that I could ever have. Her heart and love for me were my hope for what I believed to be "salvation." She was the one who bore Jesus, who was Himself God and so she was supposed to be hailed as the "Mother of God." She was held in such honor that the Catholic Church praised her to be the "Queen of Heaven." The dogma, on which her identity as the Mother of God and the Queen of Heaven rested, was lovingly embraced by the faithful. As the beloved Pope John Paul II honored her with his undying devotion, Mary became the epitome of hope for the Catholic soul.
The recognition of Mary’s official Queenship was initially promoted by several Catholic Mariological congresses. Several Popes described her as Queen and thus, Queen of Heaven. The Catholic dogma states that Mary was assumed into heaven and is with Jesus Christ, her divine Son.
She was to be hailed "Queen," not only because of her divine motherhood of Jesus Christ, but also because of her exceptional role in the work of eternal salvation as willed by God. She was exalted Queen because of her unique manner of assistance in the redemption of man. She was venerated "Queen of Heaven" according to Pius XII who mentioned her being "crowned in heavenly blessedness with the glory of a Queen."
As to her unique role in man’s salvation, however, the Word of God clearly resonates in Scripture the following Truths...
"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:12
"For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;" I Timothy 2:5
As a Catholic, I never realized that the Bible indeed mentioned a "Queen of Heaven." I reckoned that the title was appropriate for Mary since I believed with all my heart all the dogmas related to Mariology. But God clearly included this particular title in His Word in order for everyone to see whom it refers to.
I was ignorant of what was written in God’s Word. The Bible mentions the title "Queen of Heaven" only in the book of Jeremiah. Hebrew women made offerings to this female pagan deity who was
identified as a goddess of love and fertility, synonymous with the Assyrian and Babylonian, Istar and the Roman goddess, Venus.
The prophet Jeremiah strongly prophesied against the idolatry of the people in the towns of Judah and Jerusalem during his time. He prophesied against families who resorted to serving other
gods and provoking God’s anger. Jeremiah 7:17--20 describes how the Lord’s anger burned against the idolatry of those who worshipped the "Queen of Heaven."
The honor that was given to Mary by the Catholic Church had long been deceitful and the Catechisms are altogether contradicting and confusing for the faithful who would really take time to visit them. For although the Church insists that Mary is the Mother of God; and that she is Queen by grace, by divine relationship, by right of conquest and by singular election; and that she is Mediatrix of All Graces, that she is ever present at the side of each person, giving nourishment and hope, the "foundation of all our confidence," that through her are obtained every hope, every grace and all salvation[xl], the Catholic Church also insists that it is a wrong conception of Catholic devotion to the Mother of God to treat the Blessed Virgin as an almost divine being in her own right, as if she had some glory, some power, some majesty of her own that placed her on a level with Christ Himself[xli]! Wasn’t that exactly what the former placed her to be?
It is a deceived state for a Catholic to believe that Mary is "ever present" (which is known as God’s Omnipresent characteristic); that salvation is obtained through her (the fifth promise of the Catholic Church’s Lady of Fatima said that "the soul who recommends itself to her by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish"[xlii]); and yet also believe that it is wrong to think of her as having such divine powers. There’s such a great deception of our souls that we needed to get out of.
