For those of you who know me, you know I love to bake. Not having a family, I have to be satisfied with baking for our troops, and I'm also always looking to surprise people who do things for me with some homemade treats. (I can't wait for the day when I can bake for Jesus!) Earlier today I made some little orange swirl cakes for the two clerks at the Post Office - both lovely Christian ladies - and for the tellers at the bank. I made up two packages of the cakes in clear plastic boxes, and had a few left over. I sure don't need to keep them around the house, and I felt the Lord urging me to put them in a box and take them with me, as He'd find someone for me to give them to.
When I handed the clerk at the PO one of the boxes, a lady who was obviously disabled and on a motorized chair, and who was at the counter with the other clerk smiled and said, "How good they look! Would you believe me if I said I work here so I could get some?" We exchanged a few works - she had the loveliest smile - and as I went back to my car the Lord let me know that she was the one He wanted to have the extra cakes. Her face just lit up when I went back and handed her the box, and she said, "Let me give you my special thank you," and gave me what looked like a thank you card.
Well, she had these specially made. Her picture is on the front, along with the words "Thank You." Inside it says:
"You were kind to me just now, and I want to let you know I appreciate what you did. Throughout my life, many persons have helped me, and I would like to show my gratitude with more than a mere 'thank you.'
What can I do for you that would best express my gratitude for your kindness? Perhaps I could share with you what I consider to be some of my greatest treasures, inward peace and joy.
As you looked at me you noticed the crutches or wheelchair. That may be the chief reason you were so very helpful. If you noticed the smile on my face and wondered about it, may I tell you why it is there?
At the time of my birth, it was discovered that my legs were deformed. I did not realize, however, until the age of ten, that I had a much more serious deformity - a sinful heart, for God says, 'All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.' (Romans 3:23) Although there was no cure for my deformed legs, there was a cure for my deformed, sinful heart. Again we read in Romans, 'But God commendeth His love toward us, which we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.' (Romans 5:8)
There was an emptiness deep within my heart. The cure was very simple. I told the Lord Jesus that I was sorry for my sin and that I wanted to receive Him as my Savior and Lord. 'But as many received Him, to them gave He power to become sons of God, even to them as believe on His name.' (John 1:12)
From that time on Jesus Christ has been my Friend and Guide. My life has been yielded to Him for His service. I find great joy in studying the Bible, God's holy word, and teaching it to others.
My desire is that you may have the same peace and joy which I have. These are found only in a Person, the Lord Jesus Christ. You can learn of Him and His gifts by reading the Holy Scriptures. I trust that you will receive Him as your Savior if you have not already done so. Then you too can enjoy my wonderful treasures. This will cause me to rejoice and be glad that I needed your help. Again, I thank you. Betty Jean."
Isn't she amazing? What a lovely example of bringing glory to God, despite her infirmity - she's certainly taking what Satan intended for evil and using it for good. I'll bet the Lord is leading people to help her who need to hear the salvation message; there's such a joy about her, that anyone would be drawn to her.
I just wanted to share that; it was an honor to meet her. I know I'll see her again at the rapture and beyond, but I hope I get to see her again before then; I'd like to get to know her better.
