Army braces for mass Arab marches on Israel’s borders

A series of simultaneous mass marches to Israel’s borders are being planned in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Judea and Samaria and the Gaza Strip on March 30, Israel Hayom has learned. The marches are being held under the Global March to Jerusalem campaign.
According to the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, “Iran openly and with its own propaganda supports the March 30 events and is also involved in organizational preparations for the marches.” Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah and the Islamic Jihad are also planning to be involved in the marches. In addition, the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign is also planning a so-called “global activity day” of educational events.
March 30 is marked by Israeli Arabs as “Land Day,” held to commemorate the events of that day in 1976, when demonstrations by Israeli Arabs against Israeli government plans to appropriate land turned violent and a number of protesters were killed.
The defense establishment has expressed concern that the marches could turn violent, and has said that Iran’s involvement is additional testimony to the extremist nature of the event.
Defense sources said it was still too early to know whether the marches would take place and how they would develop, and the Israeli military has been preparing for border infiltration attempts. Last year, dozens of Palestinians from Syria infiltrated into Israel from the Syrian border, injuring 10 Israeli soldiers.
An Iranian website that appears to be connected to the regime in Tehran has launched a cartoon contest in connection with the march. The cartoons are to illustrate the theme of Palestinian refugees’ “right of return” and to oppose the “occupation” of Jerusalem. The same website sponsored a contest for Holocaust-denying cartoons in 2006.
