Following President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration Jan. 20, repealing Obamacare will be Republicans’ No. 1 priority, according to House Speaker Paul Ryan.
“We’ve got to repeal and replace Obamacare, because that is really hurting families,” Ryan said Sunday in an interview Sunday on CBS’ 60 Minutes.
The speaker expressed that those currently covered under Obamacare wouldn’t be abandoned, saying the GOP will look to replace the Affordable Care Act with a better plan.
“You’re not pulling the rug out from under the 20 million people who already have Obamacare?” asked host Scott Pelley.
“No,” Ryan replied. “We want to make sure that we have a good transition period, so that people can get better coverage at a better price.”
“What do Republicans intend to put in its place?” Pelley asked.
“Patient-centered health care that gets everybody access to affordable health care coverage. So they can buy what they want to buy,” Ryan said.
He said coverage of pre-existing conditions would be an important part of the new legislation.
When asked about a timetable, Ryan didn’t give a definitive answer.
