Report: Undercover Israeli agents roam freely in Iran
The U.K.’s Sunday Times reports that Israeli troops are on the ground in Iran searching for evidence of nuclear weapons production • Mossad agent describes base in Azerbaijan to London Times.

Undercover Israeli forces are in Iran searching for evidence of Iran’s nuclear intentions and progress, according to a report by the U.K.’s Sunday Times on Sunday. Israel’s covert troops are said to be disguised as Iranian soldiers and have entered Iran through the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
Since Iranian officials have blocked International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors from visiting the Parchin military base near Tehran, the Times claims that the Israeli soldiers were tasked with seeking inside information concerning that site.
The report by the Sunday Times claims Israel has been infiltrating Iran for several years, transporting their troops into the country via Black Hawk helicopters, and in recent months have significantly increased the intensity of their work.
The IAEA has identified Parchin as the location of suspected nuclear weapons-related testing. In a Nov. 2011 report, it said it appeared to be the site of experiments with conventional high explosives meant to initiate a nuclear chain reaction.
Recent reports have claimed that Israel is conducting a covert war against Iran, which included sending the operatives into the country. In an interview published in The London Times on Feb. 12, a man claiming to be a Mossad agent based in Azerbaijan said that Israel’s foreign intelligence agency had set up a base in the country, which shares a border with Iran. The man, identified in the article only as “Shimon,” told the newspaper that dozens of Israeli intelligence agents were working out of the base.
“This is ground zero for intelligence work,” the man said. “Our presence here is quiet, but substantial. We have increased our presence in the past year, and it gets us very close to Iran. This is a wonderfully porous country.”
A report by the Iranian state-run news agency IRNA said “terrorists” linked to the killings of Iranian nuclear scientists had escaped to Israel through Azerbaijan.
