Joyful Noise

I don't often go to movies, and when I do, it's at the cheapie theater, so that's why my reviews are weeks after the release date - I refuse to pay $9 to see a film when I can see a live theatrical performance for only a few dollars more.
Anyway, I had planned to see "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat" last night, but "Joseph" took sick and the show was cancelled. I was all dressed up and with no place to go, so I looked to see what was playing at the cheapie theater that hadn't yet started by the time I got there...apart from some children's movies and something that showed a half naked woman on the poster, Joyful Noise was the only option.
Several years ago I saw a movie (I can't remember the name offhand) about a church choir that had joined a Gospel music competition, and it wasn't bad - it had some wonderful music in it, so I expected more of the same. Well, this movie was based on the same premise, but from there all similarities ended.
There were some thin story lines around the main theme of the competition - including a lady from the church who hadn't "been with a man" in four years, and a man who hadn't "been with a woman" in three. The film showed the woman preparing breakfast in bed for the guy after he had spent the night, went to serve it to him...and found him dead. (Never mind a good church-going woman shouldn't have been having sex outside of marriage....) There were rebellious teens, a wealthy woman (Dolly Parton) who basically told the pastor how to run the church or she'd withdraw her financial support, a woman (Queen Latifa) who was angry with her husband for joining the Army and who wrote letters to her children that she led them to believe were from him (lying), a choir that was eliminated from the finals when it was found the church sponsoring them had hired professionals to perform....what a mess!
I expected to at least hear some good music. When the church choir made it to the Joyful Noise Finals, the first choir to perform was a group of children who were fantastic. In what I found the only amusing scene in the entire show, the choir was aghast at the thought of trying to "beat" some kids. Dolly Parton said, "Well, the Bible says SUFFER the little children...they're resilient; they'll get over it!" ;D
The choir start to perform a piece of relatively traditional music; the audience was practically yawning. So, Vi Rose, the choir master, (Queen Latifa) declared that the Lord was worthy of better, so she had the choir perform the song they had been practicing in secret but that she wouldn't at first permit: Sly Stone's "I Wanna Take You Higher." Of course, that song - which is about drug use - won the competition.
Don't waste your time and money on this fiasco - it would be better used to purchase a Michael Card CD so you can hear some GOOD Christian music.
