Troops are to be deployed onto Britain's streets amid fears a further terror attack 'may be imminent', the Prime Minister has announced.



Theresa May revealed the move this evening, less than 24 hours after the bomb attack at a teen concert in Manchester, which left 22 dead and 59 injured.



The Prime Minister confirmed the identity of the Manchester suicide bomber as 22-year-old Salman Abedi, a Mancunian of Libyan descent.



But intelligence agencies fear he may not have acted alone - leaving open the possibility of an active Islamist terror cell on the loose.



Britain's Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre last night raised the terror threat level to 'critical', its highest level.



The threat level has only been raised to 'critical' twice since the system was introduced on August 1, 2006.



It came after the worst UK atrocity since 2005, when a nail bomber murdered 22 concert-goers as young as eight at an Ariana Grande concert.



Abedi, a Mancunian of Libyan descent, was the son of an airport security worker, MailOnline can reveal.



Police yesterday carried out a controlled explosion at the doorstep of his home during raids around the city. Forensics officers were seen emerging from the killer's property carrying a booklet called Know Your Chemicals.



Police also raided a house where Abedi's brother Ismail, lived and arrested a 23-year-old man, prompting speculation that Ismail had been detained.



Five of the 22 victims have been named as college student Georgina Callander, eight-year-old schoolgirl Saffie Roussos, 26-year-old John Atkinson, Kelly Brewster, 32, and Megan Hurley.

Islamic State terrorists have not officially claimed responsibility - but it has now emerged jihadi cheerleaders were tweeting about the arena four hours before the detonation.



Police revealed a lone male attacker detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in the foyer as children and their guardians left, singing and enjoying themselves.



Unconfirmed reports suggest the device was packed with nails.



Police, intelligence experts and analysts have scrambled to build a picture of the attacker’s movements over the last months.



It is not yet clear if he had accomplices.



But, groups linked with (ISIS) have now claimed the attacker’s atrocities will be followed up by others.

A chilling message on Telegram, from an ISIS supporting group Yaqeen Media, said vehicle attacks will take place in the UK.



It stated: “Today we fight you on our land, and tomorrow on your land, by Allah’s permission.



“Soon, the vehicle attacks will be witnessed on your streets, by Allah’s permission.”



Elsewhere on the encrypted messenger site one user said: “We hope that the perpetrator is one of the soldiers of the caliphate.”



ISIS supporting Twitter accounts sent messages about an attack on Manchester arena - four hours before a suicide bomber attacked.



Terrorism Analyst and researcher Michael Smith has been monitoring ISIS Telegram accounts in the wake of the attack.

He said the brutal killings are being widely celebrated.



He wrote on Twitter: “Posts on ISIS social media networks argue Manchester attack is justified by airstrikes killing Syrian, Iraqi children.



“I’ll spare you images.”



The Yaqeen group also shared a horrifying image of a poster baring the words “kill them where you find them” and “soon, very soon”.



The word “France” is written under an image of a bloodied attacker.



Vehicle attacks currently pose a huge problem for security forces around the world after multiple terrorist plots using cars and trucks as deadly weapons.

Britain was placed in lockdown today as soldiers were put on guard outside Buckingham Palace and Downing Street.



As the police continued a frantic hunt for accomplices of the Manchester bomber, Scotland Yard announced that troops were being deployed to guard “key locations” including the Palace of Westminster, embassies and other sensitive sites in major cities.



The UK’s threat level has been raised to critical with 984 military personnel being deployed around the country



In London, Changing the Guard at the Palace was cancelled and Parliament was closed to the public. The Old Bailey’s public galleries were also shut.

Soldiers are likely to be on duty at this weekend’s FA Cup final at Wembley and the Twickenham rugby premiership final.


Armed police will guard concerts in the capital this weekend and at major events such as the Chelsea Flower Show.



There are fears an Islamist bombmaker may be on the loose because of the sophistication of the device used in the Manchester attack on Monday.
