I'm all for helping people in need, but the idea of food stamps has gotten out of hand. For example -
I'd go to the supermarket when I lived in Hawaii, and in front of me on line would often be some young beach boy who chose to move there, live on the beach, and spend his days surfing. He'd pull out his EBT card to pay for his snacks; as a disabled widow I don't qualify for food stamps because I get "too much" income.
I had to go to the State Office Building yesterday, and the welfare office is on the ground floor. Virtually every person coming in and out of that office either lit up as soon as they left the building, or finished a cigarette before going in. When I passed a gas station a few days ago I saw a sign advertising a special on cigarettes for "only" $41 a carton. So, these people can spend hundreds a month on cancer sticks, but can't afford to pay for food? What's wrong with this picture? (Not to mention, many of them had on lots gold chains & other jewelry and fancy smart phones....)
My neighbor - who bought more house than she can afford so is often behind on her mortgage - gets food stamps because she has a couple of kids. Yet, she just got a newer car, as did her oldest son. Why should taxpayers have to support her kids if she doesn't know how to spend her money?
I've heard so many stories of people who are really in need and don't get any help for one reason or another, yet so many deadbeats who contribute nothing to society are taking advantage of the system. Sad.
