NO, YOUR SWIFFER WETJET WILL NOT KILL YOUR PETS
If you went on Facebook this week, you probably saw the latest viral warning. It basically said if you use a Swiffer WetJet, you signed your pets up for a death sentence.
Glad to break this to you, it’s a hoax. So calm down and subscribe out of Fear-Mongering Monthly.
ABC News actually busted this myth nearly 8 years ago. They invited “America’s Veterinarian” Marty Becker to break down some of the most common myths.
Obviously, they broke down the legend about chocolate and dogs first. Basically, a small amount won’t kill your pooch. But, should they chow down on a full sized bar, that’s a different story.
Rule of thumb: the darker the chocolate, the worse it is for your puppies. Glad to clear the air on that particular myth because I bought into it as well.
However, the big scare this year is over the Swiffer Wet Jet. In a now-viral letter on Facebook, OP claims a Swiffer took out two German Shepherds.
They erroneously claim the dogs went into liver failure because of the chemicals used in Swiffer Wet Jet. Apparently, one of the main ingredients is antifreeze… or a compound one molecule away from antifreeze.
Here’s the letter.
So, let me tell you what I learned in science class. Hydrogen peroxide is one molecule away from water. Same also goes with table salt and chlorine. So, a compound one molecule away from antifreeze is still a different compound. So, that’s strike one for failing basic chemistry.
Also, this letter doesn’t provide information on the dog owners or how to contact their local vet… therefore, strike two.
Lastly, the letter starts with liver failure in the dogs and kidney failure in the cats. Strike three to me because even OP couldn’t keep the story straight.
But, because we humans don’t bother to do 10 seconds of Googling, we worked ourselves up into mass hysteria. If you scroll through the comments, you’ll find people vowing to trash their Swiffers.
Here’s the thing, though. The Animal Poison Control Center of the ASPCA investigated this rumor and do you know what they found? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
In fact, they found Swiffer Wet Jet AND Febreeze totally safe for animals.
So let this serve as a very important lesson to all: do your research. If you see something that riles you right on up like a priest who absently wandered into a brothel, turn to Google.
Better yet, just visit Snopes.com and let them do the hard work. Why do we always seem to forget about Snopes whenever these hoaxes come knocking on our digital doors?
Anyways, if you do worry about what could potentially harm your pets, stay away from lilies. Seriously, lilies are ridiculously toxic to cats and dogs. No bouquets or lily scented green-thumbs for you.
