"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. matthew 6 19.
this verse...whole doctrines..ways of life..attitudes..zoo much is taken from this verse..
vows of poverty...giving of wealth and possessions to the church and its social causes..this i mean not just of the RCC but of all of us.
the context of the verse is plain...spiritual pride..look for yourself.. these are the riches here spoken of..deeds of righteousness...
look at the rich young ruler.. he boldly stated that he had kept all the law from childhood.. CHRIST JESUS asked him to give all away and follow him..
i think i see that it was not the possessions ..the earthly wealth and his love of it that kept the man from following...it was the thought of his righteousness being worthless in that sense.. he was rich because he was obedient to the law..he did actually prosper from his obedience..and he was not willing to give that up.. so in reality it is all a question of the TRUTH OF THE SPIRIT. and not of anything of this carnal world..and the riches thereof.
just some thoughts to question.. love elktooth

That's some amazing insight. I've never considered this, but it makes sense. Thanks!

i guess what i am thinking is that the rich young ruler would not give up his material wealth because these things were a form of proof of his obedience to the law of Moses. the material things are in a way immaterial to the point...religious pride seems to me the point.
