If you do a study on how homosexuality came to be removed from the DSM IV, you'll see it was a political move, not a medical one, that originated in California.

California became the first state to ban “gay cure” therapy for minors Sunday when Gov. Jerry Brown signed SB 1172. The Senate bill stated that “conversion therapy” for minors is ineffective and could be dangerous. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Ted Lieu (D), claimed that “conversion therapy” treatments "cause extreme depression and guilt" and may lead to suicide. “No one should stand idly by while children are being psychological abused, and anyone who forces a child to try to change their sexual orientation must understand this is unacceptable,” Lieu stated. The American Psychological Association said in 2009 that mental health professionals should no longer tell clients that therapy can make gay people straight.
Republican and previous presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann and her husband have been accused of trying to “cure” gay people in the past. Therapists were said to have told gay men their “condition” can be reversed if they “pray away the gay”. Another therapist told John Becker that “in God’s eyes we are all born heterosexual”. Psychiatrists claim this behavior can be damaging. Andrew Ramirez was told this by Bachmann when he was 17.
Opponents of SB 1172 claim that it may be unconstitutional. Some are stating that this bill interferes with a parent’s ability to raise their children. "We're talking about stepping into the doctor's room or the psychiatrist's office and clamping a hand over the mouths of the clinicians," a spokesman for the Pacific Justice Institute says. "The privacy concerns are fairly significant. In our view, it's an intrusion beyond what the government has done before." The Conservative legal defense group known for their Christian values claim they will fight this bill. Pacific Justice Institute states this violates free speech for therapists and access to information for patients.
Senate Bill 1172 bans “non-scientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,'' Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement. ``These practices have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery." Brown hopes other states will continue California’s lead.
