Powdered Donuts
Yield: 24 mini or 12 regular donuts 1x
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
Pinch of nutmeg
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
2 teaspoons vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup powdered sugar, for tossing
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. and grease a mini or regular donut pan.
Stir together the milk and vinegar and set aside for about 5 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients. This will cause the milk to curdle and will essentially create a homemade buttermilk.
Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt and nutmeg in a small bowl.
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, curdled milk mixture, vanilla extract and melted butter until smooth.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir, just until combined. It is ok if there are a few streaks of flour. You do not want to over mix.link
Use a ziploc bag with the corner cut off to pipe the donut batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each about 3/4 of the way. Do not over fill, or the hole in the center will fill in when baking.
Bake at 350 degrees F. for 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. If using a regular sized donut pan instead of a mini, add about 2 minutes to the baking time.
Let the donuts cool for a few minutes in the pan before turning out onto a wire rack to continue cooling.
While the donuts are still slightly warm, toss them in the powdered sugar. I like to just put it all in a sheet pan and shake it around, but you could also just roll them in a shallow dish.
Notes
Tossing the donuts in powdered sugar while they are just slightly warm helps the sugar to stick. Do not try it when they are hot, or the sugar will simply melt and be absorbed into the donuts.
The pinch of nutmeg adds that nostalgic flavor that the classic store bought Hostess donuts had, but it is not required if you want a plain vanilla donut.
