Vladimir Putin watched on today as Russia simulated a 'massive nuclear strike' with terrifying practice launches of ballistic and cruise missiles.



The despot remotely observed the annual exercise, called 'Grom' or 'Thunder', which uses test launches to put Moscow's nuclear forces through their paces in a show of force to the West.



Defence minister Sergei Shoigu reported to Putin that the drills were intended to simulate a retaliatory 'massive nuclear strike' by Russia.



The drills involved the test-firing of a Yars land-based intercontinental ballistic missile from the northern Plesetsk launch site and the launch of a Sineva ICBM by a Russian nuclear submarine in the Barents Sea, just ten miles away from the shores of NATO member Norway.



As part of the exercise, Tu-95 strategic bombers also launched cruise missiles at practice targets.



Footage shows a large nuclear submarine in the water during the simulation that featured multiple drills.



The large team were filmed making preparations for the simulation nuclear strikes and following launch protocol as they took part in the annual exercise.



Clips also showed them flicking switches, running up stairs, speaking to each other on radios and monitoring the missiles before they were fired.



As the test began, the Russian Sineva was seen soaring through the air from the water and disappearing into the clouds.



Meanwhile the Yars later shot into the air after switches were flicked and a sound indicated that it was about to go off.



After it was launched, a huge ball of flames engulfed the sky and left a cloud of smoke in its wake as a loud bang was also heard.



The drills were monitored remotely by Putin, who also spoke to some of his military chiefs after the drills.

The five-minute audio clip, released by Ukraine's intelligence agency, appears to capture the internal rifts between Vladimir Putin's men during their invasion of Ukraine, with some apparently being forced to shoot dead any deserters.



In the audio, described by Ukraine as an intercepted phone call between a Russian soldier and his wife, the man describes how his commander has ordered him to 'wipe out' any Russian troops who flee from the front line.

'The Russian Federation wants to make Kherson a "city of death",' Podolyak said Thursday. 'The Russian military mines everything they can: apartments, sewers. Artillery on the left bank plans to turn the city into ruins.'



General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, supreme commander of Ukraine's army, said his men have begun moving towards the city and have advanced four miles in two directions and captured about 12 villages in the last 24 hours. General Zaluzhnyi added that he is unable to confirm or deny whether the retreat is for real.



'We continue to conduct the offensive operation in line with our plan,' he wrote in a post on Telegram.



The withdrawal, if genuine, is the most humiliating defeat for Vladimir Putin in a long line of defeats since the war began. Like with prior incidents of shelling and fighting coming near the sensitive facility, each warring side is blaming the other for these latest attacks. "Explosions shook the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine over the weekend in what appeared to be renewed shelling of the facility and the surrounding area, according to the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," The Hill reports Sunday.



The BBC cites local sources who say over a dozen powerful explosions were heard Saturday night at or in the vicinity of Zaporizhzhia plant, which remains Europe's largest nuclear facility.


IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called the reports "extremely disturbing" and "completely unacceptable". He urged for fighting to halt there immediately. "Whoever is behind this, it must stop immediately. As I have said many times before, you’re playing with fire!"

In a separate statement, Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba noted that what the country needs above all is not equipment to help civilians survive in the winter, but weapons to keep the war going.



“Weapons remain a top priority for diplomats. With the shift of the aggressor state to missile terror against our town and people, this work has become even more urgent,” said Kuleba.
