They're Just Wild About Harry!

With another Harry Potter demon-fest coming out tomorrow, I thought this would be a good time to share a blog that I wrote about the idols in America today.
Pop Culture & Christians: An Idol By Any Other Name Is Still An Idol
"You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God..." (Exodus 20:3-5)
An idol: It's something that is worshiped or adored. God makes it abundantly clear in His Word that He is to be regarded above all. Man was created with the need to worship, and worship he will. Sadly, too many people are trying to fill the "God shaped space" within them by worshiping other things, be it their children, possessions, or an aptly named "idol."
HOW GREAT THOU ART!
"Touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm!" (1 Chron. 16:22) It's the clarion cry of "Christians" jumping to the defense of their idols such as Benny Hinn...mere men whose doctrine is often seriously flawed. (Hinn, for example, has publicly stated that God is in reality nine persons, as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each have a spirit, soul, and body!) These men live lavish lifestyles, fly private jets, and prey off widows and pensioners. Yet - as the heated arguments on so-called Christian discussion boards all too often attest - they are revered and yes, even worshiped, by their adherents. When Hinn makes his "grand entrance," the hymn "How Great Thou Art" is invariably played. One who is at all spiritually attuned and filled with the true Holy Spirit senses that it is not God who is being praised here!
Tens of thousands flock to arenas to see these men "perform," and even more send in their "seed faith" offerings - convinced by their gurus that God simply cannot bless them unless they sow an offering into the ministry first! I've often wondered: If you were to take a city with two large arenas, and Benny Hinn was appearing in one and Jesus of Nazareth in the other, which would draw the larger crowd?
Years ago, I used to post to a Christian board frequently. The topic of one thread was, "Who is the most famous or influential person you've ever talked to or met?" There were dozens and dozens of responses.....some had met celebrities, others had merely sighted them, and yet others had had an opportunity to speak to a politician or high-level executive. I posted, "Each and every day I have the honor of speaking to the Most High God, Creator of Heaven and Earth! And I know beyond any doubt that He not only listens to every word I have to say, but He's always there when I want to talk to Him!" No one was impressed or even commented - Not. One. Person. And this was ostensibly a Christian board! But oh my, did they ever get a rise out of hearing that someone had met Robert Redford or even their Senator!
A MATTER OF PRIORITIES
I was appalled and embarrassed when one of my classmates at a Christian college - a middle aged woman and mother - got all silly and giggly over seeing a picture of some singer (whose name already escapes me) and said, "Ohhhh.....he's my boyfriend!" No, she's not putting him before God Himself, but what about God's law? This is a woman who is married; she is not to lust after another. Does the fact that this person is a pop culture icon somehow make it alright? Somehow, I don't think God would condone it. The unprecedented popularity of the show aptly named American Idol shows where the priorities of much of this nation lie...and they're not where they should be.
I don't see a problem with enjoying artists, authors, or actors as a rule, but when that person - or that person's work - goes against anything written in the Word of God, it's time to back off and take a closer look.
God's not against fun, and He's certainly not against our enjoying ourselves. His laws and rules are put there with one purpose in mind: to protect us from being hurt. Sadly, many think that "following the rules" will destroy any hope of having fun, but the exact opposite is
true!
THEY'RE JUST WILD ABOUT HARRY!
Are you surprised that this had led to Harry Potter? I simply must vent about it! When the subject came up in my Pop Culture class, one woman who apparently agrees with Maya Angelou argued, "Why, Harry Potter has brought literacy back to our children!" Maybe so...but at what price? Generations of children grew up reading the Bible; is it no longer considered relevant? For that manner, there are a lot of good, wholesome books on the market - why do parents want to feed their children poison?
"It's just fantasy." That was what I was told by another classmate who jumped to the defense of her hero. Yeah, well.....
"There shall not be found among you anyone who …practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you. You shall be blameless before the LORD your God. For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not appointed such for you." (Deut. 18:10-16)
She argued that since we no longer stone rebellious children, this Scripture - God's eternal Word - is no longer applicable. Well, it's her prerogative to (foolishly) ignore the OT, but the NT itself has many warnings about the subject, including 1 Thess. 5:21-22, James 1:27, 3 John 1:11, 2 Cor. 6:14-17, 1 Tim. 4:1, Rom. 12:9, James 4:7-8, John 3:19-20...and many more.
The very fact that something is abhorrent to our Father should make it equally abhorrent to us, but that sadly isn't the case. In fact, so incensed was this one particular woman about my belief that her idol Harry is evil, that - that even several weeks after that discussion she alluded to it, condemning me for going dancing at Studio 54 many years ago and essentially accusing me of being a hypocrite! So I disagreed with her; why not - if she's so sure she's right - just drop it and let it go, not stew over it for weeks, looking for an opportunity to bring the subject up again? ls something wrong with this picture? I can't help but feel that allegiance this strong to a fictional character is unnatural.
WHEN YOUR IDOL BECOMES YOUR GOD
Harry Potter: Witchcraft Repackaged
The following link shows a video about the popularity of witchcraft among children and teens, and explains how the "fantasy world" of Harry Potter helps introduce children to Wicca.

Although some Christians - including Chuck Colson - see the HP series as nothing more than harmless fantasy, others see it as evil sweetly packaged to seduce our children. Fans of Harry Potter have been known to try and emulate him by putting a lightning-shaped mark just like Harry's on their foreheads. This mark is known as "Thor's calling card," and is the same mark adopted by the Nazi SS. Couple that with the prophecy in Rev. 13:16 ("He caused all great and small to receive a mark in their forehead..."), and one cannot help but wonder if our children are simply being conditioned in preparation of things to soon come. Not to mention, Harry's deceased father appears to him as.....a horned god! (As is Satan!) Hello - is anybody listening?
So great is the public's love of this creature that Harry Potter licensed products abound. You can get everything from children's clothing to toys to candies to books that are connected to Harry Potter in some way; amazingly, there's even an entire theme park devoted to this one fictional character!
Not surprisingly, there are websites that will try and convince you that this is all good, clean fun - and for the first time in years, the kids are reading, aren't they? Surely, only good is coming from this series of books! One website known for debunking urban legends even mentions "hysterical religious groups":
www.snopes.com/humor/iftrue/potter.asp
They claim that the Harry Potter series is not leading children into witchcraft. If so, where is the list of sources to prove it? Note, Snopes is not a Christian site and, in fact, openly ridicules such topics as the Rapture.
Well, if I want an opinion on a subject, I'm going to go to someone who knows the subject backwards and forwards and inside out. Who better to know what is - and isn't - witchcraft than a former witch who is now a Born Again Christian? The following website has some good information on the subject, including links to other websites about Harry Potter and the occult; pay special attention to the footnotes:
www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/harrypotter.html
Not surprisingly, one can find arguments on both sides of the issue. But you know what? I'm sure that - if I bothered to look - I could even find websites that laud the merits and benefits of using crack cocaine! Sure, they may fly in the face of common wisdom...but people will go to any lengths to justify actions and/or behaviors they're not willing to cease partaking in.
There's a story that goes, "A woman offered her friend some brownies, and the friend - who loved sweets - accepted eagerly. As she bit into the first brownie, the baker told her, 'By the way, I accidentally dropped a wee bit of dog poop into those brownies...but I did manage to scoop most of it out.' Her friend was appalled, and spit the brownie out. The baker didn't understand why she was upset....after all, 99.9% of the brownies were made of good, wholesome ingredients! They were only barely touched by the dog poop! But her friend didn't want to eat any of that stuff, in any amount!" Along the same lines, rat poison is 99% good, wholesome cornmeal - it's the 1% of poison that kills the rats.
In 2007 Jacqui Komschlies wrote an article in Christianity Today comparing Harry Potter to "rat poison mixed with orange soda", and said, "We're taking something deadly from our world and turning it into what some are calling 'merely a literary device'". Jeremiah Films, a Christian video company largely known for its Clinton Chronicles release, also released a DVD entitled Harry Potter: Witchcraft Repackaged which stated that "Harry's world says that drinking dead animal blood gives power, a satanic human sacrifice and Harry's powerful blood brings new life, demon possession is not spiritually dangerous, and that passing through fire, contacting the dead, and conversing with ghosts, others in the spirit world, and more, is normal and acceptable"
It's not just Christian Fundamentalists who are opposed to Harry Potter and everything connected with him. In 2002, the Greek Orthodox Church authorities in Thrace released a statement denouncing the Harry Potter books as Satanic, saying that they "acquaint people with evil, wizardry, the occult and demonology".
A number of Islamic scholars have argued that the books' magical themes conflict with Islamic teachings. A series of "online fatwās" have been logged by imams against Harry Potter, decrying it as un-Islamic. In 2002, the books were banned in schools across the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to a spokesman from the education ministry of the UAE government, the books' fantasy and magic elements were contrary to Islamic values.
The Roman Catholic Church takes no official position on Rawlings' books, but in 2003, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger – who later became Pope Benedict XVI – received a manuscript of a book critical of the novels from a German author. He stated in a private letter expressing gratitude for the receipt of the book, "It is good that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly". He also recommended she send a copy of her book to Fleetwood at the Council for Culture. In a second letter, the cardinal gave the author permission to make his first letter public. These letters from Ratzinger prior to his elevation to the papacy have been used to suggest that the new pontiff is officially opposed to the novels.
Criticism against the books also comes from the one of the official exorcists of the Archdiocese of Rome, Father Gabriele Amorth, who believes that, "Behind Harry Potter hides the signature of the king of the darkness, the devil".He further told the Daily Mail that the books make a false distinction between black and white magic, while, in reality, the distinction "does not exist, because magic is always a turn to the devil". Amorth believes that the books can be a bad influence on children by getting them interested in the occult.
There are parents who would rush to grab a toy away from their child the moment they hear that the toy is being recalled because there is a very slight possibility that the child might be harmed by it. Yet how many of these same parents are poisoning their children's very souls?
"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matt. 10:28)
