Adopted dog saves new owners from near-tragic fire
Lucky dog! Lucky owners, too. Russell and Krystal Ewing adopted Tank, a boxer-mastiff, from the York County Animal Shelter just days before he was to be euthanized. Then he saves them when a blaze breaks out while they are sleeping at home.

Tank, a boxer-mastiff mix who was rescued from a shelter, repaid his owners by alerting them to a house fire. He whined until his owners woke, then led one, Russell Ewing, to the laundry room, where the fire began. The accidental fire began when a furnace ignited a gas pocket, investigators said.

Firefighters traditionally own Dalmatians, but might want to consider boxer-mastiff mixes – because one such dog just earned his spots.
Tank, a 7-year-old rescue dog, returned the favor and saved the lives of his owners when a fire broke out in their Indian Trail, N.C., home.
Russell and Krystal Ewing adopted Tank from the York County Animal Shelter a few days before he would have been euthanized. Shortly after, Tank rescued them.
"He definitely did return, without a doubt, and rescued us," the dog’s owner Russell Ewing said.
Russell and his wife Krystal were sleeping peacefully as the fire blazed in their laundry room. After noticing the fire, Tank hurried into the Ewing’s bedroom, nudged Krystal with his nose and whined until Russell woke up, reported NBC-affiliate WCNC.
HERO DOG SAVES TODDLER FROM DROWNING IN POOL
Russell initially thought Tank just wanted to go outside, so he got out of bed and walked down the hallway with the dog.
But Tank did not head for the back door as he usually does. Instead, he stopped abruptly outside the laundry room. Russell saw smoke emanating from the laundry room.
Responding firefighters prevented the fire from spreading throughout the home and successfully extinguished the flames. The accidental fire started when a furnace ignited a gas pocket, according to investigators.
The Ewings are staying at a local motel with Tank for the time being. But the rascally canine, who once chewed up Krystal’s shoes, has more than made up for past mischief and can sleep wherever he chooses.
Russell and Krystal are usually grateful around this time of year but, thanks to Tank, the meaning of the holiday is truly hitting them this time around.
"We'll be blessed a lot every Thanksgiving,” Russell said, “but we'll definitely have a lot to think about.”
