WAUPACA - More than 70 firefighters from multiple departments in two counties on Monday battled a blaze at a pizza plant in eastern Portage County.
The American Red Cross reported that its volunteers provided food and water for firefighters battling a five-alarm fire at the Festive Foods pizza plant at 7811 Portage County D in the town of Belmont, near the Portage-Waupaca County line.
The fire, which broke out at the plant Monday morning, was first reported to dispatchers in Portage County about 9 a.m.
Photos taken by American Red Cross volunteers showed flames and thick black smoke shooting from the roof of the plant. Sheriff's Office later Monday warned residents within a one-mile east and northwest of the fire's location to keep their windows closed to avoid the heavy smoke.
Firefighters from some departments were able to clear from the scene by 4:30 p.m., but a number of crews remained at the fire scene.
The operation at 7811 County D is the company's headquarters, and also home to the company's business offices, according to the company website.
The plant's owner, Festive Foods LLC, manufactures frozen pizzas for multiple sellers, including the Gino's East label named after the well-known Chicago restaurant. Festive Foods' frozen pizzas come in various styles including "deep dish" and "tavern style."
The burning plant is in Portage County, but technically is within part of Waupaca County's fire district, Portage County dispatchers said.
