Anonymous benefactor donates $1400 for surgery to save shelter dog's life

An anonymous donor gave money to help a silky terrier get the surgery she needed
A six-year-old Silky Terrier named Iara has the kindness of a stranger to thank for restoring her to full health and giving her an excellent chance at adoption. Iara had lost her home and ended up at Norfolk Animal Control after her owner was arrested and incarcerated (not on animal cruelty charges).
Norfolk Animal Control was treating Iara for a bladder infection and discovered the dog had kidney stones and would need surgery. They only problem was the department did not have the $1400 plus dollars needed to cover the surgery.
Norfolk animal control officer Hilary Cohen knew the small dog was in tremendous pain and wanted to find a way to get her the treatment she needed. She applied for a veterinary assistant grant, began fundraising and appealed through local media for help from the public.
Shortly after, she suddenly got stunning news. A woman who had read out about Iara’s situation walked into the police station and anonymously donated $1400 towards the dog's care. The woman handed the money over to the dispatcher, never gave her name and left.
The Norfolk Massachusetts Animal Control and Shelter Facebook page wrote on Wednesday, "Secret Santa has struck. I literally cannot even fathom this. About 45 minutes ago a woman walked into the police station and anonymously donated $1400.00 towards Iara's surgery!!! Thank you who ever you are!"
An anonymous donor gave money to help a silky terrier get the surgery she neededIara's surgery was pushed forward so she would not have to endure her pain any longer than necessary. Doctors at Acorn Animal Hospital removed a bladder stone from Iara measuring 2 cm by 3 cm. The stone was actually as large as her bladder!
The hospital and shelter have nothing but thanks for Iara's anonymous benefactor. Kathy Connerty of the Acorn Animal Hospital told ABC6 News, "This person found it in their heart to donate such a sizeable amount of money, to take care of this little dog. It’s a miracle, and it’s so heartwarming."
Officer Cohen was equally touched. "In our profession it’s not often that we see generous and kind people, so it’s very nice to see that side of the public."
Cohen hopes Iara's guardian angel will return to the station so she can thank her in person. In the meantime, the dog with "the fun personality" is recovering from her surgery. Cohen said that Iara has had several people express interest in adopting her when she recovers.
