Now Germany’s economy is tanking and Russia is in complete control of its energy as winter approaches.

On Monday Russia’s Nord Stream 2 Pipeline from Russia to Germany lost all pressure from 300 to 7 bars.



The cause is unknown.

Unprecedented leaks in the Nord Stream energy pipelines connecting Russia to Germany were likely the result of sabotage, Germany argued Tuesday.



The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipeline systems suffered three leaks in a single day on Tuesday, though neither pipeline was operating at the time. The damaged offshore pipelines lay at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.



Neither of the pipelines was operating at the time of the damage, however. Nord Stream 1 had been operating at just 20% capacity since July and stopped service entirely at the end of August. Operators stated that international sanctions against Russia had made maintenance impossible.



Nord Stream 2, meanwhile, has never entered official operation as Germany declined to certify its completion last year. The project was stopped altogether just days ahead of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Three leaks on Russia’s Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea on Monday are suspected as sabotage according to U.S. and European leaders and analysts. Sweden reported detecting explosions early Monday morning and Monday evening, with the morning one registering 1.9 on the Richter scale and the evening explosion 2.3.


The Danish military released photos and video of the gas leaks bubbling up in the Baltic Sea:

The pipelines are protected by a layer of steel-reinforced concrete reported the Guardian:



“The steel pipe itself has a wall of 4.1 cm (1.6 inches) and is coated with steel-reinforced concrete up to 11cm thick. Each section of the pipe weighs 11 tonnes, which goes to 24-25 tonnes after the concrete is applied.”

Sweden’s SVT reported (excerpt via translation):



“Swedish measuring stations registered two clear explosions in the area on Monday. One had a magnitude of 2.3 and was measured at 30 stations. – There is no doubt that it was an explosion, says seismologist Björn Lund to SVT Nyheter. The explosions were recorded at 2:03 a.m. and at 7:04 p.m. on Monday.”



Bloomberg added:



Two powerful underwater explosions were detected on Monday in the same area of sea as the Nord Stream gas leaks, according to the Swedish National Seismic Network.



The monitoring network said the first explosion occurred on Monday at 2:03 a.m. Swedish time with a magnitude of 1.9 on the Richter scale, followed by a second at 7:04 p.m. on the same day with a magnitude of 2.3.



“It’s clear that there has been some kind of explosions, and the coordinates match the leaks,” Peter Schmidt, a seismologist who works with the group, said by phone.

“You can clearly see how the waves bounce from the bottom to the surface. There is no doubt that it was a blast. We even had a station in Gnosjö that picked this up,” said Lund, who also lectures in seismology at Uppsala University.



Earlier, the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said sabotage could not be excluded.



Meanwhile the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, called the news “very concerning” and said that “no option can be ruled out right now”, including sabotage.


Among those pointing to the war in Ukraine was the Polish prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, who was speaking at the opening of a a new gas pipeline between Norway and Poland. “Today we faced an act of sabotage. We don’t know all the details of what happened but we see clearly that it’s an act of sabotage, related to the next step of escalation of the situation in Ukraine,” Morawiecki said.



Poland’s foreign minister was more forthright, suggesting that the damage could be an act of provocation on behalf of the Kremlin.



“Sadly our eastern partner is constantly pursuing an aggressive political course,” the deputy foreign minister, Marcin Przydacz, said in Warsaw. “If it is capable of an aggressive military course in Ukraine, then it’s apparent that acts of provocations in western Europe also cannot be ruled out.”

Germany suspects the Nord Stream gas pipeline system was damaged by an act of sabotage, in what would amount to a major escalation in the standoff between Russia and Europe.



According to a German security official, the evidence points to a violent act rather than a technical issue. Swedish seismologists detected two explosions in the area on Monday, when leaks appeared almost simultaneously in the Baltic Sea.



Reuters reported U.S Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised sabotage at a D.C. press conference Tuesday:



“There are initial reports indicating that this may be the result of an attack or some kind of sabotage, but these are initial reports and we haven’t confirmed that yet,” Blinken said at a press conference alongside India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. “But if it is confirmed, that’s clearly in no one’s interest.”

Last February Joe Biden threatened to “end” Nord Stream, “Pres. Biden: “If Russia invades…then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.” Reporter: “But how will you do that, exactly, since…the project is in Germany’s control?” Biden: “I promise you, we will be able to do that.”

Marketwatch reported warnings have been issued to steer clear of the pipeline leaks:



The Swedish Maritime Administration on Tuesday issued a navigational warning due to leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.


…”We are warning vessels in the vicinity and asking them to keep a safe distance of five nautical miles (about nine kilometers) from the sites,” it said, while also cautioning that aircraft should keep a safety altitude of 1,000 meters in the area.



…The Danish Maritime Authority also issued a navigational warning and established a prohibitive zone within five nautical miles of the pipeline.

CIA Warned Germany Of Possible Nord Stream Pipeline Attack

German magazine Spiegel said the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) recently warned Berlin about the increasing signs of a possible planned attack on the Nord Stream pipeline system.



Spiegel reported, citing unnamed sources, that the CIA tipped off Berlin in the summer about possible attacks on NS1 and NS2.

Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen told reporters Nord Stream pipeline system damage to NS1 and NS2 "are deliberate actions, not an accident."



"It is now the clear assessment by authorities that these are deliberate actions. It was not an accident.



"There is no information yet to indicate who may be behind this action, Frederiksen said, adding that authorities don't see NS1 and NS2 damage as a military threat against Denmark.

Swedish broadcaster SVT reported that the Swedish National Seismic Network detected two underwater explosions near the Nord Stream pipeline system on Monday.



"One of the explosions had a magnitude of 2.3, and was registered at as many as 30 measuring stations in southern Sweden," SVT said.



Bjorn Lund, a professor in seismology and director of the Swedish National Seismic Network, said these two seismic events were explosions.

Could the Nord Stream gas leak be a sign of worse to come? - analysis

A targeted attack on the Nord Stream pipelines would serve to demonstrate how energy is increasingly being weaponized by certain countries.

A reported gas leak in a Russian pipeline under the Baltic Sea appears to come at the worst possible time as tensions over Ukraine increase and European countries fear a winter of discontent. According to reports published Tuesday, European countries "scrambled to investigate unexplained leaks in two Russian gas pipelines running under the Baltic Sea near Sweden and Denmark."



The incident comes the same day as reports noted the launch of Baltic Pipe, a line that will give Poland and Denmark gas from Norway.



What does this mean? Sweden says there are two leaks in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, both of which occured shortly after a leak on the nearby Nord Stream 2 pipeline was discovered that had prompted Denmark to restrict shipping within a five-nautical mile radius. According to statements from Sweden on the matter, the damage is “unprecedented.”



"It is hard to imagine that [the Nord Stream leak] is accidental. We cannot rule out sabotage, but it is too early to conclude."

This seems like a strange coincidence. Modern pipelines are not supposed to suddenly sustain damage or start leaking. According to the reports “neither pipeline was pumping gas to Europe at the time leaks were found amid the dispute over the Ukraine war, but both still contained gas under pressure. The incidents will hinder any effort to start or restart either pipeline for commercial operations.”



Back in early September, Russia had shut the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline and reduced the flow of gas being directed to it. This was a predictable Russian retaliation against Western sanctions they faced following their invasion of Ukraine. Russia has often used energy supplies as a weapon and as a means of blackmailing other countries. Some European countries, particularly Germany under Angela Merkel, sought to connect to Russia’s gas, thus creating dependency on it.


The US response to the Nord Stream pipeline

The US administrations of both former presidents Obama and Trump were concerned about Nord Stream 2 and about Europe being dependent on Russia for gas, although other American officials had differing views on the matter. In 2018, Foreign Policy published a piece that claimed “What’s Good for Russian Gas Is Good for America: Washington's opposition to a gas pipeline connecting Russia and Germany has never made sense.” The US was so deeply concerned about Nord Stream 2 that it warned companies not to work on it.



Last year, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that any entity involved in the pipeline risks US sanctions and should stop its involvement. “As the President has said, Nord Stream 2 is a bad deal — for Germany, for Ukraine, and for our Central and Eastern European allies and partners," he said at the time.



"As multiple US administrations have made clear, this pipeline is a Russian geopolitical project intended to divide Europe and weaken European energy security.”



Now things seem to have gone from bad to worse. Russia has been saber rattling recently. It is trying to mobilize hundreds of thousands of men but the regime in Moscow is watching them flee the country. Moscow has also been hinting at a nuclear standoff with the West, and now, suddenly a “mysterious” event has occurred off of the Danish coast.



What is the significance of the possible attack?

If this was a targeted attack on the pipelines it would serve to demonstrate how energy is increasingly being weaponized.



The mysterious happenings at the pipeline come as some media outlets reported protests in Germany regarding energy prices. Germany’s Die Welt said that “federal authorities apparently consider targeted attacks to be the cause of the leaks in the two Nord Stream pipelines." And, according to their report, this information was "learned from security circles, meaning that "Sabotage is therefore expected due to the timing, the three lines affected and the strong pressure losses in Nord Stream 1.”



The attack would be anything but trivial, the article says, suggesting that it could have been carried out by special forces.



With the Nord Stream pipelines temporarily switched off, gas deliveries from Russia to Germany and Central Europe would only be possible via the Yamal connection via Poland or the Ukrainian pipeline network. Thus, forces linked to Ukraine could be eligible to transfer gas. A "false flag" operation by Russia would also be possible in order to drive gas prices up further. An insider told Der Spiegel that it could be an attack to provoke uncertainty in the European gas markets.”



According to Denmark’s Politiken newspaper, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen views the leaks in the Nord Stream pipeline "with the utmost seriousness."



"It is hard to imagine that it is accidental. We cannot rule out sabotage, but it is too early to conclude,” she was quoted as saying, while Polish deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcin Przydacz stated that “unfortunately, our eastern neighbor is constantly pursuing an aggressive policy.



"If it is capable of an aggressive military policy in Ukraine, it is obvious that provocations cannot be ruled out, not even in the sections that are in Western Europe" she continued.



With the opening of the Baltic Pipe pipeline it appears that the timing is an extraordinary coincidence as this means Poland and Denmark will both be able to receive gas from Norway, as it will transport gas via the North Sea and Denmark to Poland.


The European Commission noted that “today, the Baltic Pipe was inaugurated at an opening ceremony in Goleniów, Poland. The event marks the end of the process of the Baltic Pipe construction, a key route to carry gas from Norway through Denmark to Poland and neighboring countries.



"The Baltic Pipe will make it possible to import up to 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas annually from Norway to Poland and to transport 3 bcm of gas from Poland to Denmark," the statement continued, saying that the start of gas transmission is planned for 1 October 2022.



And then, the same day as this was announced the leaks were found in Nord Stream 1 and 2, potentially harming pipelines that took billions of investment over the years.



If a country was involved in sabotaging major pipelines this would mark a huge escalation in the conflict relating to Ukraine; expanding the conflict to the waters of the Baltic. It shows that energy can become a weapon and that countries should plan on this fact for the future.

ANALYSIS: Nord Stream Pipelines Sabotaged, and Only One Country Benefits

Three deep-water explosions destroyed the Nord Stream pipelines under the Baltic Sea on Monday. While the MSM and governments reported “leaks” in the pipelines following sudden pressure drops to zero, Swedish seismologists knew better.



One of the three explosions measures 2.3 on the Richter Scale of earthquake intensity, but this was no earthquake. It was explosion—like a gigantic undersea mine. Via Reuters:



Bjorn Lund, seismologist at the Swedish National Seismic Network at Uppsala University, said seismic data gathered by him and Nordic colleagues showed that the explosions took place in the water and not in the rock under the seabed.


The explosions guarantee Germany and the EU won’t go wobbly with regard to sanctions against Russian energy imports. The damage to pipelines will take months repair, and repairs are unlikely to begin until next summer. Even if Germany were to cry “uncle” as civil unrest intensifies over lack of heat and energy, even if Russia decided to turn the power back on, the conduit for Russian gas to Europe is broken.

The first explosion was recorded at about two o’clock in the morning on Monday, the second at 07:04 p.m. on the same day. But means also involves proximity. Chinese or French naval activities in the area would have raised flags. Geography would seem to preclude the United States except for the fact the US Navy operates in every ocean in the world with advanced war fighting capabilities. So the list of suspects with the means to destroy Nord Stream is down to the UK, US, Russia, and Germany.

So, we shift to motive.



Germany has no motive to damage its energy lifeline. Germany is highly dependent on Russian natural gas. Entire German industries are being nationalized because of the lack of energy due to sanctions against Russia and Russia reducing flow through the pipelines. Germans held massive protests over the weekend demanding Germany pull out of the anti-Russian alliance in exchange for a return of energy.



Great Britain has also suffered under the sanctions imposed after Russia invaded Ukraine in February. The British economy is in shambles, forcing the UK’s central bank to pivot back to quantitative easing. Additionally, the new government in the UK has its hands full with forming a government. It is unlikely the Brits would attempt such a caper.


Russia seems to have a motive: inflict long-term pain on Europe for sending lethal arms to Ukraine. But Russia didn’t need to blow up the pipelines. Russia controls the valves that send or halt gas flow to Europe, and she’s already turned off the spigot. Russia paid for a portion of the pipeline and expects to resume profitable energy exports to Europe once the war with Ukraine settles. Why would Russia cut off its own nose?

Reuters quoted NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday, saying attacks against EU critical infrastructure would be met with a "determined response." He called the acts "sabotage. "



"All currently available information indicates that this is the result of deliberate, reckless, and irresponsible acts of sabotage.



"We, as Allies, have committed to prepare for, deter and defend against the coercive use of energy and other hybrid tactics by state and non-state actors. Any deliberate attack against Allies' critical infrastructure would be met with a united and determined response," a statement from the North Atlantic Council (NATO) read.



Separately Stoltenberg tweeted:

Stoltenberg nor NATO named the culprit behind the pipeline attacks, though some EU officials have suggested Russia.



There was no mention of how NATO "arrived at its assessment that the damage, which it said has caused substantial environmental fallout and shipping disruptions, resulted from the intentional attack," WSJ noted.



NATO's statement is a significant increase in tensions between Russia and the West ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's move to annex parts of eastern Ukraine.

Sweden's coastguard confirmed a new leak was discovered on the damaged Nord Stream pipeline system in the Baltic Sea on Thursday, according to Reuters. Add this to the three other leaks for a grand total of four that have been spewing natural gas into the water since Monday.



"Two of these four are in Sweden's exclusive economic zone," coast guard spokesperson Jenny Larsson told Svenska Dagbladet newspaper. He said the other two are situated in the Danish exclusive economic zone.



While neither NS1 nor NS2 was operational during the suspected undersea explosions earlier this week, they were filled with NatGas to Germany, with Denmark estimating the leaks would dissipate by Sunday.


There are two massive gas bubbles on the surface of the Baltic above the damaged pipelines in Sweden's economic zone. One gas bubble measures a staggering 2,950 feet in diameter, while the other is about 600 feet.







Several EU heads have called the incident "deliberate" and "sabotage," with Finland stating that only a state actor was capable of the pipeline attack.



The Baltic region is getting more intense by the day as Norway, now Europe's top natural gas supplier (recently displaced Russia), increased security at energy infrastructure sites, land terminals, and platforms on the Norwegian continental shelf. There were reports of mysterious drones buzzing oil rigs.



The UN Security Council will meet Friday at Russia's request to review the damage to NS1 and NS2. Russia's US embassy asked for the meeting as it "insists on the need for a comprehensive and objective examination of the circumstances of the unprecedented attacks on Russian pipelines."



Reuters said the embassy commented on its Telegram channel that the US attempts to "squeeze out" Russian oil firms from the global energy market through "non-market methods and sanctions."



The Russian prosecutor's office told Interfax the Nord Stream incident is being investigated as an "international terrorism" probe.



For now, NS1 appears as if it won't be operational anytime soon (NS2 was never operational though filled with gas). Before this winter and the reduction in NS1 capacity, the EU received about 40% of its NatGas via pipelines from Russia, a figure that Bloomberg now has around 9%.

“It was a deliberate act of sabotage, and now the Russians are pumping out disinformation and lies,” Biden said.



The president finally made a statement in reaction to the pipeline after repeatedly ignoring reporters’ questions about it on Thursday.







Putin said Friday that the United States and its allies in the West sabotaged the pipeline.



“The sanctions were not enough for the Anglo-Saxons: they moved onto sabotage,” Putin said. “It is hard to believe but it is a fact that they organized the blasts on the Nord Stream international gas pipeline.”



But Biden urged Americans not to listen to Putin’s claims.



“When things calm down, we’re going to be sending divers down to find out exactly what happened. … Just don’t listen to what Putin is saying,” Biden said. “What he is saying, we know, is not true.”



The Nord Stream pipeline network provides natural gas from Russia to Germany, and both pipelines are leaking hundreds of millions of cubic meters of natural gas into the sea.



Dramatic photos and videos of churning water from the leaks demonstrate the significance of the impact on the pipelines. Both pipelines have been closed down:

Seismic monitors said they monitored explosive activity near the area where the leaks began occurring.

That happened again on Wednesday when “national security” correspondent Jennifer Griffin blindly accepted a Pentagon explanation regarding the sabotage of two Russian natural gas pipelines, Nordstream 1 and 2, earlier this week.



“Despite accusations flying that the United States could have been involved in the blasts that have reportedly could scupper the pipelines permanently, and without any investigation having taken place, Griffin’s crack journalism has solved the case,” Paul Joseph Watson reported at his Summit.news website.



Griffin tweeted: “There is no evidence or indication the US was involved in any way with the Nordstream 2 pipeline explosions. My question at the Pentagon briefing today: Can you rule out that the U.S. was involved? Senior Military Official: ‘Yeah, we were absolutely not involved.’”





Her bogus attempt to cover for the administration was ripped to shreds online.



“Oh, well, mystery solved, then. Thanks for that crack journalism. Gosh, I don’t [know] why someone didn’t just ask the regime sooner,” noted conservative writer and editor Jon Dougherty.





“So you didn’t bring up Biden’s proclamation, did you?” asked independent journalist Jordan Schachtel.





“No evidence or indication? You mean other than @undersecstatep and @potus specifically saying in advance that they would not allow the Nord Stream pipeline to go through if Russia invaded Ukraine?” another user tweeted along with a video clip of State Dept. official Victoria Neuland appearing to threaten destruction of the pipelines if Russia attacked Ukraine.





As Chris Menahan of Information Liberation noted, Griffin has been guilty of brazenly regurgitating regime misinformation before.



“Earlier this year, Griffin put out the debunked hoax story that Russia bombed the Babi Yair holocaust memorial in Ukraine,” Menahan wrote, adding that the report was found to be false after an Israeli journalist went to the site and found that it was unscathed.



Griffin also recycled the fake news that Russia was employing “mobile crematoriums” to “evaporate” war dead when the supposed footage ‘proving’ the claim came from a 2013 YouTube video.



“When news came out about US biolabs in Ukraine, Griffin also simply repeated Pentagon talking points to dismiss the story as a nothingburger,” writes Menahan.



Griffin was recently rewarded with a new multiyear contract, saying at the time that it “has been an honor to provide viewers with trusted reporting from the Pentagon and across the world on issues that are paramount to all of us – the security and safety of our fellow citizens and allies.”



“Trusted reporting,” she says.



In his opening monologue during a show earlier this week, Fox News host Tucker Carlson said it was highly unlikely that Russian President Vladimir Putin would have sabotaged his own pipelines.



“Natural gas pipelines are the main source of your power and your wealth and, most critically, your leverage over other countries. Europe needs your energy now more than ever with winter approaching. If you can’t deliver that energy, then countries like Germany have no need to pay attention to what you want,” he said. “You’re in the middle of a war, an all-hands-on-deck war, so you need all the leverage you can get. Under these circumstances, there is no chance you would blow up Nord Stream 1 or 2.”

“Those Who Benefit Are the Ones Who Have Done It” – Vladimir Putin Names Chief Suspects in Nord Stream Pipeline Attacks

On Monday saboteurs targeted Russia’s Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The attacks that shut down both pipelines from Russia are suspected sabotage according to U.S. and European leaders and analysts.



Sweden reported detecting explosions early Monday morning and Monday evening, with the morning one registering 1.9 on the Richter scale and the evening explosion 2.3.


The Danish military released photos and video of the gas leaks bubbling up in the Baltic Sea:

The pipelines are protected by a layer of steel-reinforced concrete reported the Guardian:



“The steel pipe itself has a wall of 4.1 cm (1.6 inches) and is coated with steel-reinforced concrete up to 11cm thick. Each section of the pipe weighs 11 tonnes, which goes to 24-25 tonnes after the concrete is applied.”

EU Parliamentarian Radek Sikorski, the Chairman of the EU-USA delegation, cheered the US following the explosions, suggesting Joe Biden had something to do with it.







And Joe Biden threatened to take the Russian Nord Stream pipelines offline before Russia invaded Ukraine.


On Friday Russian leader Vladimir Putin blamed the US and UK for setting off the explosions, saying, “It’s obvious to everyone who benefits from it. Those who benefit are the ones who have done it.”

The US and UK orchestrated the blasts on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, which delivered Russian natural gas to Germany, because they “obviously” benefit from it, President Vladimir Putin insisted on Friday.



Putin accused Washington of trying to pressure the EU into banning Russian supplies to “completely get its hands on the European market.”



“But the sanctions are no longer enough for the Anglo-Saxons,” he said, using Russian shorthand for the US-UK transatlantic alliance. “They have turned to sabotage – it’s unbelievable, but it’s a fact – by organizing the explosions on the Nord Stream international gas pipelines,” the president stated.



“They de facto began the destruction of the common European energy infrastructure. It’s obvious to everyone who benefits from it. Those who benefit are the ones who have done it.”
