There have been more than 60 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, but UK experts estimate a figure nearer 1,700. Two people are known to have died from the respiratory illness, which appeared in Wuhan city in December. "I am substantially more concerned than I was a week ago," disease outbreak scientist Prof Neil Ferguson, said. The work was conducted by the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College London, which advises bodies including the UK government and the World Health Organization (WHO). In a statement detailing the latest escalation in figures for the major viral outbreak, Wuhan Municipal Health Commission said a third person has died from the illness, while two more are in critical condition. A further 33 cases among the newly diagnosed patients are classified as “severe.” All of the patients are being kept in isolation. “The first symptoms were mostly fever, cough or chest tightness, and shortness of breath,” the agency said, advising anyone coughing or sneezing to wear a face mask to prevent the spread of germs. “Pay close attention to symptoms such as fever and cough,” they added. “Seek immediate medical attention when such symptoms occur.” Health officials said they’ve been carrying out medical observations on hundreds of people who came into close contact with those diagnosed to date, and no human-to-human transmission has been found. 17 Jan, 2020 20:34 Authorities at major airports in New York and California will screen passengers traveling from the Chinese city of Wuhan gripped by the outbreak of a new deadly pneumonia-like virus, which has since spread to Japan and Thailand. Starting Friday, passengers from Wuhan who arrive at San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles’s main international airports will undergo screening for the symptoms of a novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) that broke out in the Chinese city last month. Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will carry out the checks, along with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents.
The illness was first noticed in Wuhan in December, and is believed to have originated at a seafood and animal market in the city. The CDC states that the virus likely jumped from market animals to humans, and then may have spread between people. 2019-nCov is a flu-like virus that can cause symptoms leading from a severe cold up to pneumonia. Two men in their 60s have died from the disease in Wuhan, with the second passing away on Friday. A man in Japan and a two women in Thailand have also been infected, both having travelled from Wuhan. The CDC deems the threat to the American public to be low, yet says it is taking “proactive preparedness precautions.” link

China | 21 Jan 2020 7:43 pm Taiwan has decided to impose 14 days' quarantine for those showing pneumonia-like symptoms.. Travelers, regardless of nationality, who have recently been to China and are found to have "pneumonia-like symptoms" will now be subject to compulsory quarantine, Taiwan has announced, CNA reported. The Centers for Disease Control, deputy director-general, Chuang Jen-hsiang, said today that the new measure took effect yesterday after more cases of the new coronavirus were confirmed in China and other parts of Asia over the weekend. Previously, people were only quarantined if they developed pneumonia-like symptoms and had been to Wuhan, China, where the outbreak is believed to have first begun. At the same time, those who have the above-mentioned symptoms and have been to China but fail to report their conditions to related health authorities could face a fine of up to NT$150,000 (US$4,959) for violating the Communicable Disease Control Act, according to the CDC. Chuang said, meanwhile, that the CDC will soon have brochures distributed on flights from China, Hong Kong and Macau that alert inbound travelers to the seriousness of the coronavirus. The brochures will remind them to watch their health and report their conditions to the authorities if they develop pneumonia-like symptoms or face a fine. The CDC reiterated its appeal to Taiwanese traveling in China that they wear surgical masks and avoid contact with animals, animal markets and patients with acute respiratory syndrome. People who develop a fever, acute cough or other respiratory symptoms within 14 days after returning from China should also contact the CDC via its hotline 1922, or 0800-001-922, wear a surgical mask and seek immediate medical attention. Though the CDC noted that those with the coronavirus may not develop a fever, the measure in practice will still depend on monitoring the temperatures of inbound travelers when they arrive at airports and seaports across the country. Travelers with a fever will then be asked about their travel history and then be checked by a doctor if the situation warrants it. Those found to have pneumonia-like symptoms such as shortness of breath and low blood-oxygen levels and who have been in China over the previous 14 days will be subject to compulsory quarantine, Chuang said. A bioengineered, weaponized viral strain What seems obvious from the rapid adaption of this viral strain -- which has now achieved "human-to-human transmission" -- is that it has been engineered as a self-replicating weapon system to achieve the globalists' depopulation goals. The long incubation period that seems to be presently observed allows this viral strain to spread in "stealth" mode, largely undetected until its payload fully activates. The longer the incubation period, the more people are infected and become silent carriers (who may not even know they are infected). The CDC is also investigating another 61 potential cases from 22 states. Eleven have tested negative, and results from the rest are pending. The new case, a woman in her 60s, is hospitalized in Chicago, and is reportedly doing well. She had traveled to Wuhan, China, in December, and flew home to Illinois on Jan. 13. She was not symptomatic on the flight home. The woman had not spent much time in public after arriving back in the U.S., and had not taken public transportation, health officials said. The risk that she had infected others is low, but some close contacts are being monitored for symptoms. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said that it's important to keep in mind that there are still many unknowns about the virus. China lockdown of 14 cities as Wuhan coronavirus outbreak worsens FROM DAILY MAIL UK: In a drastic turn of events, part of the Great Wall of China and Disneyland in Shanghai have been closed as authorities desperately try to stop people spreading the Wuhan coronavirus amid fears as many as 10,000 are already infected with the killer virus. Fourteen cities, home to around 40 million people, are reported to have gone into some form of lockdown in the past two days, with public transport halted and roads closed. And a report written by researchers from England, Scotland and Florida, has predicted that a staggering 350,000 people may be infected just in Wuhan – the city where the outbreak started – by the beginning of February. In the US, one man in Washington State is being monitored after being confirmed to have the disease and other suspected cases are being tested in California and Texas. Across the Atlantic, British authorities have tested 14 people but no cases have been confirmed yet. We will continue to carefully monitor the situation and… announce the reopening date upon confirmation.’ A section of the Great Wall known as the Badaling section – one of the most visited parts – has been closed to tourists, Al Jazeera reports. The following measures have been taken to control the disease’s spread in and around China: Beijing’s Forbidden Palace, which hosts the Palace Museum, will be closed to visitors from tomorrow, Saturday The Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest, has been closed A four-day carnival planned in Hong Kong, from January 25 to 28, has been cancelled by the state tourism board Hong Kong’s Lunar New Year World Cup football tournament has been called off All public Lunar New Year events in Macau, home to more than half-a-million people, have been cancelled A report shared with MailOnline after being produced yesterday by researchers from Lancaster University in England, the University of Florida and the University of Glasgow, estimated that only five per cent of all the coronavirus cases are being diagnosed. Dr Jonathan Read, a biostatistics researcher at Lancaster, wrote with colleagues: ‘If no change in control or transmission happens, then we expect further outbreaks to occur in other Chinese cities, and that infections will continue to be exported to international destinations at an increasing rate. ‘In 14 days’ time (4 February 2020), our model predicts the number of infected people in Wuhan to be greater than 250 thousand (prediction interval, 164,602 to 351,396). ‘We predict the cities with the largest outbreaks elsewhere in China to be Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Chengdu. We also predict that by 4 Feb 2020, the countries or special administrative regions at greatest risk of importing infections through air travel are Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea.’ Businesses around China – the world’s biggest nation and home to more than one billion people, a seventh of the world’s population – are already having to take drastic measures. China expands lockdown against virus, fast-tracks hospital
By YANAN WANG yesterday BEIJING (AP) — China expanded its lockdown against the deadly new virus to an unprecedented 36 million people and rushed to build a prefabricated, 1,000-bed hospital for victims Friday as the outbreak cast a pall over Lunar New Year, the country’s biggest, most festive holiday. The number of confirmed cases around the world climbed sharply to more than 850, with at least 26 deaths, all of them in China. Meanwhile, France announced that three people had fallen ill with the virus — the disease’s first appearance in Europe. And the United States reported its second case, involving a Chicago woman in her 60s who was hospitalized in isolation after returning from China. On Wall Street, stocks slumped amid fears over the widening crisis, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average losing 170 points and the S&P 500 posting its worst day in three months. Health care companies suffered losses, along with financial institutions, airlines and other tourism and travel industry businesses. Transportation was shut down in Wuhan, the city of 11 million at the epicenter of the outbreak, and in at least 12 other cities in central China’s Hubei province, encompassing a population bigger than that of New York, London, Paris and Moscow combined. AFP AFP•January 24, 2020 China's bid to contain a deadly new virus by placing cities of millions under quarantine is an unprecedented undertaking but it is unlikely to stop the disease spreading, experts warn. The contagious virus has already reached elsewhere in China and abroad, and even an authoritarian government has only a small timeframe in which trapped residents will submit to such a lockdown, they say. "I think we have passed the golden period of control and prevention," said Guan Yi, an expert on viruses at Hong Kong University. China began its campaign on Thursday, cutting off all transport links out of Wuhan, a city of 11 million people where the coronavirus linked to SARS emerged late last year. A cascading number of nearby cities has since been added to the travel blacklist, corralling more than 40 million people in a bid to stop those with the disease travelling and infecting others elsewhere. However, with the death toll at 26 and infections being detected as far away as the United States, there are fears the exercise is too little too late. Yi, who returned from Wuhan just before the lockdown, pointed out huge numbers of people would have already left ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, which began Friday. They could have been incubating the virus "on their way out of Wuhan", he said.
